Former prison cell mates Danny (Martin Compston) and Vic (Eddie Marsan) kidnap Alice Creed (Gemma Arterton) for £2 million ransom. Vic is the controlling lead who has a detailed plan. Alice is carefully restrained by the pair. Alice catches Danny by surprise and he reveals a shocking secret. This movie has a couple of big twisty reveals. They are big, twisty, and unforeseen. There is a problematic aspect with the first reveal that I don't buy. Alice shouldn't react that way although it could be that she's flustered into making a mistake. The ending also has some more twists and turns. I may prefer a more straight up action sequence. This is overall a good tiny confined thriller.

Good thriller-drama. Solid, innovative plot. Does try to cram too many twists in though, and the ending is a bit too trite and conventional. Less twists and a grittier ending would have made this almost perfect.Good direction by J Blakeson, on debut. No unnecessary scenes - you get the information you need, even if he drip-feeds it in via throw- away lines in dialogue. The cast consists of only three actors - Eddie Marsan, Martin Compston and Gemma Arterton - and they all give excellent performances. Eddie Marsan has mostly irritated me in the past, playing conservative, indecisive, fatherly roles. Here he plays a cold, ruthless, calculating hardened criminal, and does it extremely well.

In 2008, Gemma Arterton came to cinema-goers attention as a Bond girl when she played Srawberry Fields in "Quantum Of Solace". The following year, she took on a much more demanding and disturbing role as the eponymous Alice in this dark thriller filmed on a low budget in the Isle of Man. She acquits herself very well, showing that she is far from being just a pretty face. Her co- stars - Eddie Marsan and Martin Compston who play Alice's kidnappers - are equally convincing in a work that has a mere three roles.Considerable credit goes to J Blakeson who is both writer and director of this stylish work which is essentially wordless for the first ten minutes and simply gripping as the narrative unfolds with twist after twist. In 2014, the film was remade in Danish with the less clever title "Reckless".

Can you make a tout, suspenseful flick with only three actors and four locations? It seems you can, unless you work in Hollywood. Then the overblown budget and ADHD pyrotechnics get in the way of something to say. So, back to the matter at hand, 3 people and the story full of twists and turns, granted little self-indulgent, but extremely creative. Strong, motivated actors keep all of this fragile fabric together. Because dear filmmakers, it always is about the story and relationships, nothing else can replace that. You can detonate the whole city, crash thousand vehicles and still induce excessive yawning. Some of us, faithful movie buffs, are over 14 and still have attention span. So please, indulge us occasionally.
