patsheridann Having visited historical sites like Lincoln Memorial and Ford's Theater, "The Conspirator" was a history lesson in itself. Previously, i had known very little outside of the fact when President Lincoln was shot and who shot him(John Wilkes Booth). Many parts of the movie hit home and drew my interest right from the start as i was eager to know what happened post assassination. The setting is set from the onset of the film through the busy streets of Washington D.C. It remains set there while the story of the trial of conspirators is investigated and told. Allowing viewers to get an idea of how Washington D.C looked in the Civil War Era. By the end of the movie,I realized it was much more than just the passing of President Lincoln. Also, I began to feel superior in my knowledge of the political aspects of justice, injustice, and most importantly revenge. The plot was elaborate and many were involved. The lime light focuses on the accusation of the involvement by Mary Suratte in the plan to kill Lincoln. The director (Robert Redford) and producers did an excellent job in portraying geographic filming location while also maintaining factual validity. Although the movie is strongly about finding justice for the Lincoln assassination, the film does not fail to address events that occurred with the attempted assassinations on the lives of Secretary of State WIlliam S. Seward and Vice President Andrew Johnson. The roles and excellent performance of actors such as James McAvoy, Robin Wright, and Tom Wilkinson helped support the film plot of events occurring 150 years ago. This can be attributed to the masterful casting by Executive producers and director Robert Redford. Although the court understood someone had to pay, I took comfort in knowing the importance producers took in mentioning but also challenging the morality of the constitutional rights we were, and still are guaranteed tracing back to the Civil War Era. Personally, This is a great informational movie for people of all ages. Immense political action, and important plot twists left me intrigued throughout the movie. Instant classic, regardless of how unsuccessful the "The Conspirator" was in the box office.
Nicholas DiFlorio I thought that The Conspirator was great movie and you don't need to be a big Civil War buff to enjoy it. I had never real heard or been taught much about what happened with the trials after Lincons assassination. After watching the movie I did a little more research online and thought that it was a very interesting story and the movie does a great job of telling it. There are some minor historical inaccuracies, it tells of the trial for the conspirators and specifically about Mary Surratt. I think that this is a story that everyone should know and I'm not sure why they don't teach or talk about what happened more in school. Overall I thought that it was a great movie that every one should see, especially if you are interested in the Civil War.
Riss Morton This drama is a good depiction of the controversy and emotion that surrounded Lincoln's assassination. In this movie you get to experience a new perspective of the Union being corrupt and unjust. I decided to watch this movie due to a history project. I was surprised at how involved I became in the movie. The characters were semi relatable, and you really wanted the main character to win the court case. Although court scene after court scene can become boring if you look into the underlying tone of good versus evil in the movie, you will be captivated by the struggle. The development of the plot started out confusing and the viewer may not be able to comprehend all the characters introduced and their roles. However, by the end of the movie the main characters are obvious and the viewer will become attached to them. I overall enjoyed the movie, however, I like feel-good movies with a happy ending. The end of this movie left me angry and disappointed.
karensaaven3 Overall this movie was a fairly accurate, interesting film. The inaccuracies that were present however did not make much difference; such as the room the trial was held in during the movie was on he first floor while in reality it was on the third, etc. The actors were very convincing as well, they took on the passion of the individuals they were portraying and made it believable as well as suspenseful. The movie is informative in details of the Civil War as well as Lincoln's assassination and it's aftermath. I feel as though I've learned more about these topics. I was very entertained throughout the movie as it was rather fast-paced and there was a lot of action. This movie and it's plot had the potential of being filled largely with dull dialogue, however the action made me feel as though I was actually there. I would recommend this movie to anyone interested in the Civil War and Lincoln's assassination.
