Christmas-Reviewer This film for some reason I did not care for. I love the cast. I thought the story was over reaching. Recurring dreams and a discovery follow when a businessman (Richard Thomas), his wife (Annette O'Toole) and daughter move in with an elderly widow (Maureen O'Hara) who needs help. The couple see the woman in different ways. He sees her as a (Rhymes with Witch) and she sees the lady as "Sad and alone". Clues about the old woman past are nowhere to be found in the home but as a friendships grow the woman's guard comes downI can not fault the actors performances in this movie. They are excellent. Maybe I was tired when I watched this I will give it another try next year. If my mind changes so will the review. The reason why I will watch this again is because so many people like this film that I think I might of missed something.
TheBlueHairedLawyer Sure, it's a little religious so if you're not Christian (I'm an atheist) it can get on your nerves, but The Christmas Box is everything a Christmas movie should be. Unlike Elf (2003) or Prancer (1989), The Christmas Box has no crude humor and it isn't too hokey. This movie features a slightly dysfunctional family, but not so much that it makes the movie depressing. There's no swearing, no fart noises, no nudity and nothing that'd make it inappropriate for children. I put it on for my younger brother last night and he loved it. The soundtrack was great, the acting wasn't bad and the plot was creative. If you want a nice, family-friendly holiday movie to watch, look no further! The Christmas Box isn't perfect but it's one of those movies that'll have you remembering the nostalgia of childhood Christmases in your past, rather than running for the door to go puke in the snow the way Elf and Prancer do.
srlucado "The Christmas Box" tries to mix together several elements--corny melodrama, supernatural thriller, redemptive tale--but to my mind succeeds best at showing what good actors can do with fairly mediocre material. In the opening shot I thought, "Wow, got to be a Hallmark TV Movie"--which it is, I learned from the closing credits. That should tell you about all you need to know. Richard Thomas is quite good as the husband/father who needs to learn a lesson, and of course Maureen O'Hara would be great reading the weekly supermarket ad, so she makes this movie was very watchable. The movie has a "secret" that the plot hinges on, but if you haven't guessed it by the first ten minutes, you're not paying attention. That removed a lot of the thrust of the story for me, but it was still enjoyable going along for the ride. It's got a lot of sentimentality, but if a movie can't be sentimental at Christmas, when can it?
Amy Adler Richard (Richard Thomas) and Keri (Annette O'Toole) have moved to a new city near ski country. They sold their house in order to get Richard's ski shop off the ground, instead living in a cramped apartment with their daughter, Jenna. Keri sees an ad for a couple needed to take care of an older lady in her home. The home turns out to be a mansion and the lady chooses Richard's family to be her caretakers. Keri is ecstatic, as they are given a complete wing of the large home for their quarters and her duties are not very taxing. But, the lady of the house is sad and lonely and harbors many secrets. Also, there is a mysterious music box in the attic that plays music on its own, at times. Richard begins to have strange dreams as well. What is going on here? This is a lovely story about love, family, and friendship. Thomas, O'Toole, and Maureen O'Hara are excellent as the key players, who learn valuable lessons in giving and receiving love. The script is humorous and heart warming, although far-fetched at times. If you would like a new tradition in film at holiday times, this movie is a great choice. It upholds the values everyone should hold dear.
