Basically a raunchy, bawdy soft-core high school comedy featuring liberated(..to say the least)sex crazy nympho cheerleaders who proceed to bang anyone with a pecker in sight. The big game is coming between Amorosa(..our cheerleaders' team)and Central and we spend some time with these girls as they commence in their randy activities of seducing or simply ravaging a host of males. Lots of panties come off and sex is frequent with the usual expected high school jokes, such as the filthy janitor(..with a peep hole in his equipment room to spy on the girls as they get undressed), the virginal innocent who yearns for the right sexual experience, locker room stripping, giant orgy between the football team and cheerleader squad(..which results in their being too drained physically to participate successfully in the big game), the final game itself and the hi-jinx that ensues in regards to how Amarosa must combat their foes(..there isn't much of a competition since the cheerleaders actually ball Central as well in order for both teams to be on equal footing!).There's sex between a cheerleader and the group's "supplier"(..he has the ability to supply them drugs and favors in regards to skipping certain classes)in a vehicle as it goes through a car wash. One of the cheerleaders actually humps the school bus driver as he steers down the block. Jeannie(Stephanie Fondue), the virgin newcomer to the squad, is almost gang raped by the football team who found her naked in their shower(..it was an initiation trick by her girls). Jeannie's father is seduced by Claudia(Denise Dillaway)while watching a football game as the cheerleaders were having a slumber party. Bonnie(Jovita Bush)eyeballs Jeannie's brother, discovers him masturbating to a nude mag, and immediately propositions him! Debbie(Brandy Woods)offers herself to the Amarosa's football coach(..he himself in little more than a jock strap)and he accepts, providing some rear end plumbing. Debbie and a cooker go at it in the back of his hamburger stand. And, the sexual encounters go on and on.I watched the other Cheerleaders movies before this(..Swinging & Revenge)and expected this would be tame in comparison..boy was I in for a surprise. This movie is essentially a series of executed fantasies. Down through time most or many of us have pondered the idea of making sweet love to a cheerleader. While I found myself particularly uncomfortable watching a girl sitting up in the lap of a much older, grinning-from-ear-to-ear bus driver(..missing some teeth), as he attempts to keep from hitting cars parked in the neighborhood, or the scene where a middle-aged father gets the ride of his life, seemingly in heavenly bliss, these are obvious dreams come true, printed to celluloid. We even get a lesbian encounter between Patty(Kimberly Hyde)and her cheerleader coach. The Cheerleaders is another exploitation feature which perfectly embodies the uninhibited spirit thriving during this decade after the summer of love overflowed it's sexually free ways, spilling into the 70's. The girls seem absolutely fine in shedding their clothes at any given moment.. Especially tasteless fare, directed and acted embracing the joyous nature of love-less sex. Yeah, I enjoyed it. The camera spends a great amount of time observing the cheerleader squad's derrière, and we often get long pans up and down their bodies. The uniforms are ridiculously short(..thanks guys!)so that even when they aren't naked, they might as well be.

The film that got the whole 70's drive-in exploitation soft-core cheerleader comedy genre ball rolling -- and boy what an endearingly dippy start! The plot, such as it is, revolves around the five highly active and naughty cheerleader squad members of Amorosa High School in California who help a sweet virginal sixth new member get her cherry popped. (Interestingly enough, a majority of 70's cheerleader pictures take place in California, thereby suggesting that the Golden State was a veritable hotbed of blithely brash'n'brazen anything-goes hedonistic activity.) As usual, it's not the story that really counts; what makes this blissfully braindead affair so worthwhile are the following things: A) a nonstop barrage of eye-popping gratuitous nudity, B) an incessantly lewd'n'crude sense of humor (I loved the toe sucking gag), C) tirelessly moronic dialogue ("You look like a hag from the rag bag"), and D) an upbeat, spirited, lighthearted air that ensures that this inane beaut is a quick, peppy and most satisfying diversion.Stephanie Fondue, Denise Dillaway, Jovita Bush, Sandy Evans, Brandy Woods and Kim Stanton are all quite cute, shapely, sexy and appealing as our titular hot young honeys -- and they happily doff their duds a lot, too. The sex scenes happen at regular intervals of roughly ten minutes and take place in an amusing assortment of unlikely places: a car wash, a fast food joint, the driver's seat of a moving school bus (!), even on somebody's front lawn. The technical credits are strictly so-so: the acting is generally flat and dreadful (top thespic honors go to Patrick Wright for his deliciously hammy turn as the lecherous macho dude football coach), plus both Paul Glicker's adequate direction and Richard Lerner's basic, scratchy cinematography (the constant use of wipes and freeze frames is lovably primitive) are merely passable at best. However, David Herman comes through loud and clear with an infectiously zippy score which alternates between eardrum-splitting fuzztone-drenched acid rock and zesty bubblegum pop slop (the too-goofy-for-words catchy theme song "I Like What You're Doing to Me" won't get out of your head for a week). Too cheerfully dopey to hate, "The Cheerleaders" rates as a very agreeable and enjoyable beginning for the admittedly slight, but always entertaining 70's cheerleader movie sub-genre.

I saw this film for the first time since 1986 just today. It was all restored, too. There's not much of a plot here except for a bunch of sexually active teen cheerleaders at Amorosa High School who cheer on the football team to victory when they're not sexing it up. The real gem of the film is Jeannie (Stephanie Fondue), the newest cheerleader who wants to go from wallflower to vixen. She's a definite hottie who looks better than the rest of the cheerleaders. I also liked the running joke that is her boyfriend Nick, who goes from job-to-job. Don't expect much, but it's a film to watch when you want to turn the old brain off. There's lots of flesh to see, some goofy humor, some crazy sexual situations, some great dance sequences, and as my online pal Cory Smith has said to me while playing NCAA Football 2004 on our PS2s some great money shots. It's too bad that Ms. Fondue didn't do much else in her career but she certainly will go down as one of the cutest and sexiest vixens in the history of B-moviedom.

I've watched this film twice and I cannot think of how much more daring this film is compared to something like "American Pie". Incredibly stupid script with just horrendous attempts at acting. This film does deliver the goods. More nudity than some porn films! Could a film like this get made today? All the actress's in those late night Cinemax movies seem to have stipulations regarding their career's and I'm not sure they would do it. I tried to look up the actress's in this film and see if they went on to do anything else and a couple appeared in one or two other low budget films but none seem to make a career out of acting. I keep thinking some went into real porn under different names. Anyway, silly and fun flick really is a statement of some of the exploitation that was made in the 70's and the attitude towards nudity in film.
