Lorenzo White I LOVE found footage horror films. Especially independent ones, because without a big-budget production company calling the shots, it forces and encourages creativity from the film. This, however was not an example of that kind of creativity. The movie started off good - most of the time when I watch a found footage film, if I can get through the first few minutes without losing interest, it's usually good. But dear lord, this movie was far from good. Throughout the film we seem the same thing repeated over and over and over and over again. Every night the daughter is having a seizure-esque screaming fit in her sleep. Her parents rush to her aid while her brother just sits there recording with a camera. . .and what was she screaming about you ask? When the parents ask her the very same question, she always responds "It was really scary, and dark, so much blood". . .Seriously? And that's just one example of how this movie comes up short. All-in-all, I must say that there was barely any plot, aside from "Typical white family movies into haunted house". I guess the acting was okay. (Most of the time). Only reason I give it 4 stars instead of two is because the beginning was good.
Bumble7 I was really incredibly disappointed! Mix the "Kid records his whole day on camera" point of view of "Cloverfield" with "surveillance camera" view of "Paranormal Activity", steal the better scenes from "The Exorcist", strip away all the suspense & thrill and everything else that was good in those movies, add some poor acting and voilà: you have 90 minutes of wasted lifetime. There are 3-4 "startle&scare" moments but basically they rely on loudness and are predictable. Other than in Cloverfield, you don't build up any kind of relationship with the characters and couldn't care less about them. I honestly have no explanation why I watched this piece to it's end. More than once I just wanted to hit that eject button and fling that disc against the wall.I even rented this as 3D blue-ray. Yes it is 3D but has no single effect that would justify the inconvenience of wearing 3D glasses. You say "but 3D glasses aren't THAT inconvenient!?" You're right, they aren't - but that's how lame the 3D effects of this movie are. I honestly feel ripped off by this movie! And I'm not talking about the money! Keep the money! Just give me back my wasted lifetime!
suite92 The Robertson County Sheriff's Department (in TN, I think, rather than TX or KY) has a short segment where they say they found some footage from the cell phones and video cameras on or near the Sawyer families corpses. So, we are locked into 'found footage.' Later on in the film the cops called to find Dana Sawyer refers to himself as from Adams County PD.Brandon gets a video camera as a birthday gift. He starts annoying everyone immediately. He records some poltergeist activity in empty rooms, but never seems to notice this. He records a whole lot of other things that get ignored. The daughter has terrifying dreams. The lights flicker; the electrician they call gets electrocuted on an outside junction box. The son and his friend find some history of the county which includes the Bell Witch. As it turns out, the house and grounds intersect with the land owned by the Bell Witch. As time wears on, the family dies except for one.------Scores------Cinematography: 4/10 The usual mix: anything from shaky cam plus bad everything all the way to full-lit, beautifully framed and focused. The long intervals of static shots of empty rooms were not a plus.Sound: 4/10 Varies, just like the visuals. Some of it is really poor, where words are hard to figure out.Acting: 2/10 More or less at reality-TV level. The exorcism scene just sucked rocks in terms of acting.Screenplay: 2/10 Nothing new. Perhaps 10 minutes of content stretched over 90 minutes of bad visuals and iffy sound.
trublu215 There's some found footage films that are great...then there's a good seventy percent that are down right awful. The Bell Witch Haunting is not only a terrible film but it is quite possibly one of the worst films I've ever seen. The acting is awful, the story makes absolutely no sense and the scares come and go without ever really developing a sense of dread or suspense. There is also a ambient stock sound that portrays the "demon" that sounds so fake and superficial. It's one thing to use a specific sound to implore anticipation to the audience but its a totally different ball game when it sounds cheap and lazy. It makes us feel like we are cheated. The ending never really builds up to much except for a complete gore fest that feels more like something out of a Jason Vorhees film, not a supernatural thriller. Bottom line, this film is cheap, lazy, ludicrous, and so poorly made that it makes The Room look like a modern cinematic masterpiece. Do yourself a favor, do NOT watch this. It is by far one of the worst films I've ever seen.
