mariesms Unlike many, I found this movie to be very entertaining. James Marsden (David) and Alexander Skarsgård (Charlie) particularly excel in their roles. The film's basic plot revolves around a married couple, David and Amy (Kate Bosworth) moving back to her childhood home and community, and hiring her ex-boyfriend Charlie, and his friends, to fix the roof of their barn. But of course, trouble ensues. There are many different "dark" themes present explored throughout, from the stiff Southern American culture, one's place in nature, violence, desire.Masculinity is a another theme present. This film's dark moments have been known to give many people the chills.Having the story set in Mississippi, Southern America instead of England I think was a better move and made it more interesting. You could go and watch the more highly acclaimed Straw Dogs 1971 movie if you wish, but I think this modern remake is perfectly fine on its own.
adonis98-743-186503 L.A. screenwriter David Sumner relocates with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. There, while tensions build between them, a brewing conflict with locals becomes a threat to them both. Straw Dogs is your typical remake from Hollywood with great actors portraying roles that someone else did decades ago and although it's not a bad remake it still wasn't needed and it has some big plot holes for example his wife got raped and she didn't say anything to the police or her husband? Why? I don't know honestly then when he kills Charlie she is shocked but some minutes ago she murdered with a shotgun the 2nd guy who raped her because i'm pretty sure Charlie raped her too it's just that the scene was weird she kissed him, she pushed and she could easily escape from him when he took her underwear off why didn't she do it? Anyways as far as acting goes everyone was fine although Dominic Purcell was the best i was surprised to see Willa Holland in a role you know Thea Queen from Arrow? Anyways the remake of Straw Dogs is not exactly awful but it could be better.
Ilovehandbagsandshoes There aren't that many films that I would give full marks to but this has to be one of them. Some unusual things happen while you're watching this movie. First there's the story that you're watching unfold in front you and then there's another story running along side it that reminds you of lots of other similar stories of characters being tested. Then there's the story in your own mind revealing itself in response to what you're seeing. The story certainly makes you think, its not passive viewing by any means. For quite a long time I felt myself getting more and more upset with the tone of foreboding. I kept asking myself if I could withstand what I was about to see. Then you realise its not so much about the characters dealing with their problems, its about you and how you would deal with the prospect of this kind of menace. So very rarely as happens in films, you find yourself in the action, in the story and the 'you' in the story is doing exactly what the male protagonist does. There's a tipping point in the processing of events, that switches all of the choices and threats from being extraneous, to intimate and very personal. If that shift is communicated in the original book or if its Sam Peckinapah's contribution I don't know, but its rare all the same. Lots of films try to do it, but most fail. It could be that I've been reading too much about human evolution lately and how we are all essentially still just another species of animal on this earth struggling to survive, I don't know? But the idea that there's a desert island and beautiful tree with one perfect branch and two birds sit on the branch and fight till the death for the right to sit there, is the same for every single living thing. Whether we like it or not. Competition, greed, supremacy and the quest for ownership, however temporary, are everywhere, in all species. I do think though that the notion of choice is something that's only on offer in times of peace.
grantss Probably the worst remake of a classic movie, ever. Sam Peckinpah's original was great: gritty, atmosphere-laden, slow-burning, engrossing. This remake, directed by a nobody, is everything but that. Paint-by- numbers direction, with no intrigue at all. Characters are one- dimensional and much of the sub-plots and scenes seem contrived. The performances don't help. James Marsden is particularly irritating in the male lead role, while Kate Bosworth is just there as eye candy, I guess, and even at that she is so-so. When you realise that the original had the brilliant Dustin Hoffman and Susan George and this has James Who? and (B-grade at best) Kate Bosworth, then you know the remake isn't going to be much good. Alexander Skarsgard is reasonably good in his role, and James Woods is OK. Supporting cast are terrible.Do yourself a favour: see the 1971 original Straw Dogs instead.
