This movie is completely nonsensical and ridiculous. The absurdity begins with Commander Sonak being introduced as the Enterprise's new science officer shortly before suffering a gruesome death in a creepy ass transporter effect. Later as the Enterprise departs the solar system, they just happen to do so during a rare alignment of all the planets. Almost immediately, the Enterprise gets caught in the only wormhole in the Star Trek universe with a quantum level oscillation delay effect, but they escape by blowing up an asteroid within it. When the Enterprise encounters the cloud, it somehow becomes the only vessel who's shields withstand a blast of its plasma energy. Moments before the second plasma torpedo hits, it simply vanishes after the Enterprise transmits linguacode. Once the enterprise enters the cloud, it gets stopped by a giant sphincter which puckers up every few seconds, It is then that Spock discovers that with just a blank stare on his face and not even looking at his monitors, he can gather facts not only about V'ger, but an entire mechanical civilization on the other side of the galaxy as well. At the end when V'Ger's true nature is revealed, the audience is treated to a series of loud fart-like sounds every time an absurd plot twist is revealed while Kirk looks around as if wondering where they came from. The purpose for those ugly belt devices the crew wears is never explained either, but I imagine they are "reward" devices similar to the one in Suburban Commando.Despite all its flaws, annoyances and the fact that it's an obvious rip-off of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Star Trek: The Motion Picture is still much more watchable than any of the Next Generation or reboot films. The original cast always had great chemistry and the special effects combined with the orchestral music is relaxing to watch, even if it does drag the movie on far too long.

Having been one of the shows that was part of my childhood and growing up, the original 'Star Trek' still holds up as great and ground-breaking, even if not perfect. The first 'Star Trek' endeavour, 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture', was and still is heavily criticised by critics and the opinions on fans is a mixed bag of passionate defence and extreme hate. Personally belong in neither extreme. 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' is not as bad as its reputation, but it is a deeply flawed (even for the first 'Star Trek' film and everything has to start somewhere) and paved the way for better 'Star Trek' films, apart from the critically derided 'The Final Frontier'.Starting with 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture's' flaws, the pace definitely could have been tightened with the first half being particularly ponderous and aside from the visuals uneventful. This part could easily have been trimmed down and considerably shorter rather than being an effort to disguise that there was not enough story to justify the overlong length.Casting is uneven, with subtlety once again eluding William Shatner and very little done with the Enterprise team. Stephen Collins seems out of his depth as Decker in a role that didn't seem that difficult, instead seeming underwritten. Persis Khambatta spends much of her screen time looking awestruck. Some of the script is too patchwork and talky. However, 'Star Trek: The Motion Picture' looks amazing, a big improvement over the production values of the show. Whereas the production values were one of the original series' few faults, the production values are where this film most excels. It is beautifully and atmospherically photographed, with a '2001: A Space Odyssey' (which is quite a compliment) influence and awe-inspiring special effects. The music by Jerry Goldsmith adds hugely, it's rousing stuff and the main theme is iconic. The sound effects have a suitable eeriness.Much of the script is intelligent and thought-provoking, while the more plot oriented and character-driven second half has the delightful interaction, conflicts and development that made me a fan of 'Star Trek' in the first place, this element was always one of the original series' biggest strengths. There is a thrown in and underwritten subplot, but there is an astonishingly clever and shocking subplot and a suspenseful climax There is a '2001' grandeur to Robert Wise's directing. While the Enterprise crew disappoint and Shatner refuses to reign in, the rest of the original 'Star Trek' crew are on top form and their interaction a delight. Can never get enough of Leonard Nimoy or Spock. In summary, could have been better and the criticisms are valid but there are a lot of things to admire that makes the film much better than its reputation. 6/10 Bethany Cox

Greetings Fans everywhere, Now if some of you watch Linkara's Atop the 4thwall Reviews, Then you'd know that he is a Star Trek Fan, Hens where we are today, This is a Review of the very first Movie from the Franchise, This is Star Trek the motion picture, Released back on December 7 in 1979 (Same year as Ridley Scott's Alien movie), For those who don't know Star Trek is a very interesting Scy-fy Seires from the Original Seires up to the Next Generation, D.S.9 and Voyager and for for some reason the Original show also had an Animated Series as well, Now there are a couple of Prequel Shows like Enterprise and Discovery, those including the Reboot movies that take place in an alternate time-line, But I'll get to them in another point in time, From what I heard on the Web this movie was... not the most successful on the ten original movies which we can say is the Stardate Collection from the six original series movies to the four Next Generation movies, I'll get to them in the Order it is in future Reviews... one sec, Hay Linkara, Didn't you do a review on the Comic Adaptation of this movie? Linkara: Yeah, Why? JWB: Just asking.I would talk about the cast here but that would only make my Review to long but you and always check out my full version on my Review Page on facebook (JWB's Reviews)After watching this from my Stardate collection on Blu-Ray as a 50th Annaversary, This was my response after watching it... WHAT THE GARBAGE WAS THIS MOVIE?! This was a mess and even though the cast where great at there roles like in the 1966 series, But sure the costumes didn't match what was shown in the show and the story was really convoluted but what really let's it down was its lack of action and over-reliance on special effects. no wonder it got mixed reviews from critics, But it was fortunate enough to get $139 million at the box office worldwide, But falling short of studio expectations but enough for Paramount to propose a cheaper sequel. So yeah Not the best way to start off a Movie series, but they got better later on as we face the Wrath of Khan!

I had tried to see this movie again for years, remove it out of boredom. I'm wearing it again. How can a film of space popcorn be so slow? As there is always that Star Wars showdown, Star Trek, because I wanted to see both. But the truth has been a big disappointment. I do not see anything to this movie. It is clear that it is forty years old and the effects are not going to be of now and you will see that they fail and of course this one shows what is done in chrome, but that is the least of it. But I keep asking myself when the adventure is going to start and testosterone is going to jump. The film is so special, that at one point two nurses enter the screen and go to the sick. In this movie everything is going slow. The beginning of the film is like a trip to enjoy the ship, but who wants to delight with the ship? I do not like the costumes, they seem ugly and not appropriate for this type of cinema.Photography is normal, neither good nor bad. But the direction, starting from that the film has a lack of total rhythm, there are many plans left in the beginning. The plans are not pretty.I do not think the actors are all right. Neither good nor bad.Personally, I stay with Star Wars
