A mess of things here to both love and, well not love. It is a wild experiment that is nothing if not different and it is something to behold. A long and sometimes tedious Movie with a great deal of quirkiness and a meandering mystical story.A daunting task, undertaken by the Star/Director/Writer, this is an impressive first time effort. Not without some self-indulgent flaws and failings, it nevertheless is an Artistic array of elements that dosen't quite mesh with moments of confusion. For a Western that is quite violent, it is the gunfights that seem flat and uninspired. Especially the more elaborate confrontations containing multiple participants with dynamite and a machine gun. These come off as less than exciting when they are surely meant to be.The more close-up, gritty altercations work much better and overall it is the bizarre characters and the pithy, dark writing along with some excellent Cinematography and staging that make this quite an off-kilter combination of a standard Western template with unexpected genre concepts.

Well.....This was/is an odd film. Makes you hate most men or a lot of men. Just some odd characters. I love Dwight and think Bridgett Fonda needs to be in more films, but what was UP with the kisses Dwight was giving her in that balloon????? Were they kisses or was he cleaning her face off with his mouth? Not his tongue, but here, let's kiss strangely and you better fall in love with me when I do it. Weird. Still love Dwight though, just hope his next writing adventure is better. However, I like the idea of what happened to the character that got his manhood cut off when he was going to take what he wanted from Bridgett Fonda's character. Oh well....worth a watch...but not the best film.

Although I have seen very few of Dwight Yoakam's movies, this one was OK. I didn't mind the violence, but the sexual content was a little strong. I'm not going to drag it through the mud, and here's why. He helped write the screenplay, direct it, and he starred in it. Maybe he had a story in his heart he just wanted to get out there for all of us to see. The music was one of my favorite things. Through the whole thing, I could close my eyes and relax, only when the music was playing. Some parts were kinda dry, but I would probably watch it again. The only thing that I had a hard time believing was Vince Vaughn as a cowboy. Not the easiest thing in the world to picture if you have seen some of his other movies.

I've heard it said that Vince Vaughn described this as the "punk rock of Westerns" or some such. If by that he meant the bad punk rock that's just mindless incoherent noise, well, he's spot on.The way I envision this falling together, Yoakam and some of his wacky buddies were sitting around, under the influence of a foreign substance, realized they all had a coupla days to kill and decided to shoot a movie. He decided that he'd always wanted to make out with Bridget Fonda, so took a chance and wrote her totally pointless character into the script. Since she's not exactly had a full plate the last decade or so, she jumped at the chance for a paycheck even if it meant, you know, kissing someone who looks like Dwight Yoakam. They gathered up a bunch more weirdos to round out the cast, a cinematographer who's not half bad, and made themselves a movie. A terrible, terrible movie.IMDb readers, please believe me. The 10-star reviews here are just "jokers" who are trying to trick you into seeing this film for their own perverse pleasure. The people ascribing a deep inner meaning are like the art snobs who enjoy telling you why a painting done to look exactly like one your 3-year-old would do is ACTUALLY much more important and valuable than a painting done by your 3-year-old. Don't let them win. There's NOTHING worth seeing here (other than the always lovely Bridget Fonda. But seriously, just go to her entry and look at some of the photos. The acting is comperable.) This isn't a "so bad it's good campy fun" sorta flick. It's JUST PLAIN BAD.
