I just got back from my annual pilgrimage to the theater to see the Academy Award nominated shorts and I must say that I was a confusing year. Three of the nominees were amazingly poor--so poor that I heard a lot of folks in the theater grumbling about this. Fortunately, the final two nominees were exceptional. Then, like the last few years, they shows some shorts that were not nominated but were sort of like 'honorable mentions'. This year, all of these non-nominated films were superior to these three nominees--and "Skylight" was the best of them. Now I am NOT implying that "Skylight" is a brilliant film or that it will change your life. It's NOT an amazing piece of art, but it IS one important thing...FUNNY. After listening to all the people grumbling earlier in the show, it was a wonderful relief to hear everyone chuckling about "Skylight"--a funny and very creative film. The film purports to be a film about the hole in the ozone. However, it turns out that it's NOT some heavy-handed documentary about the environment and consists of LOTS of animals exploding. I know it sounds dreadful and mean--but you just have to see it. And, see ALL of this film as the credits are the best part! A truly hilarious little film without pretenses--just laughs.
