Picked this one up really inexpensive, just to have something to watch in the evening. The cover promises something very good, but the movie itself fails to deliver. Its a low budget flick, that's good. Because sometimes you will get some unexpected stuff because of the artistic freedom and such. I really like low budget horror movies like The Bunker and Outpost. (especially Outpost is good) However, this movie is not scary at all, the bloody teenager became irritating over time, because he is not scary at all. Just staring with his head lowered, like Anakin Skywalker. There are no "shock" moments, which scare you. Only gore, blood and lots of foley artists slimy sound effects. I am a filmscore buff, so I paid attention to the score... sorry but the score it very bad. Very very cliché, and obtrusive/irritating.Anyway, after watching this movie, I put it in the trashbin.

I think I did included a couple of spoiler, but I didn't want to get blacklisted, so I said yes just to be sure. Anyway, Timothy V. Murphy is this movie's only redeeming quality (basically because he is hot looking, he's got that Irish brogue working for him, too). First I gave it a 3, but I just finished watching it and I had to change that to a 1. It was stupid. It did start out very promising, but quickly took a big turn for the garbage can. I admit my attention started to wander and if I had not done so I might have been able to figure out what was bloody (pardon the pun) going on. And what the h@## was that at the end. Well, it did have a couple of good ideas, like the kid's fingerprints and the pictures collectively composing the kid. Excellent bloody people for special effects, as well. Oh, yeah, it did have Patty McCormack from 'The Bad Seed' (she so rocked in that movie). But all in all, please don't ever make me watch it again.

Well, shallow Ground delivers a fairly original take on a very mundane horror film idea; but unfortunately, it doesn't come off that well as the plot is delivered in a very confusing way and as the film isn't all that interesting - working out exactly what's going becomes more of a chore than anything else. Director Sheldon Wilson obviously appreciates atmosphere, which is a good thing and the film also looks rather nice. The story takes place around a police station near to a dam. This provides a decent setting as much of the surroundings is made up of woodland area, which gives Shallow Ground a backwoods slasher sort of feel. The film kicks off properly when a naked, knife-wielding kid who just happens to be covered in blood arrives at the station. The cops handcuff him to a chair, and then we get shown what happened to the chief's girlfriend one year previously. Naturally, the coppers want to know who the boy is and where he came from; and the investigation leads the chief to confront 'his own personal demons' (blah blah).Shallow Ground is something of a weird horror film, as its style is that of a dull ghost story - but it's also really quite gory by modern standards! The gore is definitely what saves it as if it wasn't for the buckets of blood, this film would have been too torturous to bear. There's not a great deal of 'stand out' gore scenes, however; the one towards the end which goes on for ages is the only real memorable part of the movie. The cast isn't anything to write home about, but I was excited to see Patricia "The Bad Seed" McCormack on the cast list, as I haven't seen her in anything since the 1956 horror classic. Her performance here is something of a disappointment, however, as she fails to make an impression along with the rest of the performers. The influence of the buffoon M Night Shyamalan can certainly be seen on this film, as the director sees fit to chuck in a completely absurd twist to go along with the questionable plot. The final climax doesn't make any sense at all, and leads me to think it's there just to add 'ambiguity', or because Sheldon Wilson hoped to get a budget for a sequel. I hope he doesn't get it.

I believe this movie sets a new standard for horror films.I believe it has EVERYTHING a horror movie should be.It's got ambiance, gore, plot, nudity, blood, and of course the horror(most important part). The musical score REALLY sets you in the mood, with eerie violins just like old school horror movies. The scenery is absolutely perfect for this kind of film..starts out daylight, but with an overcast and it stays that way till later in the film which becomes night-fall(obvious in a horror flick) but not so obvious with the rest of it)The acting is "desent" I'm not gonna lie.One of the main characters,"jack" tries to pretend he can speak like an American but turns out British somewhat.Other than that,,i have no complaints. All and all,,I LOVE THIS MOVIE.I have seen it 6 times now.It never gets worse, only better. This movie actually "creeped me out" or "got to me" you could say.Which is rare for me to find in a horror film these days.In the late 90's in early 2000,,horror movies have totally lost their touch,,until now.I worked at a video store for a good year, renting every horror film from A to Z trying to find a worthy horror flick..i almost lost hope,But then finally,I found Shallow Ground.Don't rent it,,BUY IT!!!!! its a mile-stone in horror films i promise. if you disbelieve or disagree i DARE you to comment back lol I'll say it again,,this is a GREAT movie.
