krocheav Many folk have this oddity as one of their childhood memories but, it is a far cry from the way I remembered it. Time has not been kind to this mostly silly space treatment of the Defoe classic. For those that have not seen it for many years, I might suggest they leave it that way - some things are best left within the fond memories of the past. In its day, the ultra low budget effects were acceptable but now look dismal. Only one scene held its original power for me and that was the dream sequence - otherwise I'm over it. If you can look at something for the sole purpose of pioneering progress, then you may last the overlong distance. The DVD re-mastering and music are excellent.
zee Everyone knew by 1965 – including most 10-year-old kids – that Mars was a cold, airless place. Yes, this movie predates that moment slightly, but they didn't know this little. Or they would have known better if they would've made a single phone call to Lowell Observatory. By 1909, the concept of "canals" was dead due to improvements in telescopes. And if there were such a thing as oxygen pills, surely the screenwriters understood that stomach doesn't equal lungs. This does unfortunately carry with it the obnoxious colonial attitude of the original Defoe, in regards to poor Friday, and while the friendship developed, it was never really equal. The monkey is as irritating as monkeys always are. But the cinematography and visuals are kind of cool. Yes they're retro, but very pretty. And so I couldn't give it one star because of that.
mauro volvox Yes, RCOM is a good example of the "they they don't make them like that anymore"RCOM is an adventure of two guys against the elements in a different world. Simple as that and perfect because of it. There are no romantic duos, no political intrigue, no leftist social commentaries. Besides, there are no potatoes, no poop, no political correctness, no cussing, no f... or s.. words. The visual are great (no CGI!!!), the script is good, the pace is perfect.Of course, there are those who will complain about "dated science". But, hell, this is a science fiction film, and science is not exactly the forte of science fiction, from phasers, to teleporting we all know it is a matter of suspension of disbelief.I only wish "modern" film makers could learn one thing or two from RCOM.
hopebuild I absolutely adore this movie because it made me laugh so very hard. It just has that ever so dated technology that cracks me up. If I ever get stranded on a planet other than earth I hope I find the following: an atmosphere that allows me to continually open up my space helmet, the ability to breath right out of the compressed oxygen tank without blowing my lungs up, a bunch of rocks that exude oxygen, and last but not least an aquatic plant that proliferates sausages! The movie gets better as it goes along as far as the scientific epiphanies go. Lucky is the earthling who gets stranded on Mars only to have it all. Do yourself a favor and watch this movie. It's priceless! P.S.- This treasure would have gotten at least one more star had Adam West not died so early on. I would have loved to have seen Batman enjoying the native sausage plant life.
