luke Please please please read the one star reviews on this, ultimately if your going to watch the film at least know what your getting yourself into. I like suspense building, I like tension, I loved Mr Vampire and Chinese culture, I don't want to be accused of being a western reviewer who knows nothing about Asian movies or told that I just didn't get it. There are approximately 10 minutes of great visuals (not so great I needed to sit through the entirety of this film.)The characters are so bland and so uninteresting, the fact that I had any feelings towards them at all was down to the actors and certainly not the plot. The film dragged on and on... and on. The first time I tried to watch it I fell asleep, the second time was a real chore, had the remote been closer to me I would have sped up most scenes. Unfortunately I have to throw this on the list of another movie from China where the story and characters just fall completely flat compared with neighboring countries like Korea and Japan. I read somewhere that many film studios in China have closed due to piracy being so big there and it seems the only films being made are visual/special effects movies that companies feel will appeal to a wide audience and make money. This seems to fit with the general downtrend of good Chinese movies being made. The high reviews really surprise me with this movie and I highly recommend this is avoided at all costs. Don't fall for the clever trailer or the positive reviews this is a bad and soul-less movie.
Flow I won't declare this one a total loss, as it has its good parts but as it goes on and on it starts to get too fuzzy to follow. Even laughable here and there I might say, cause some scenes are way too typical "Asian horror that won't end already!"The good parts: as everyone else said, long live the effects, nicely done, captivating even; the plot is OK, especially the first 70%, where you find out more and more, things start to get together and you are intrigued; characters are all OK.The bad parts: the never ending finale!; the extremely poor twist; some scenes make pretty much no sense. All in all, if you into Asian horror, guess you have to add Rigor mortis. But if you looking for a late night scary movie, it might be better to look elsewhere. This goes more in the fantasy section to be honest.Cheers!
cyongbin It's not a stereotype Hong Kong horror movie for the start. So if you are looking for those genre of movie, this is definitely not for you. It's been long since there's a representative movie for the Hong Kong movie industry. Rigor Mortis falls in that category, one which possibly can turn the tide of the industry, if the other Directors picks up the finer points of the movie and understand the new consumer pattern of the current generation of movie-goers, and stop mass producing those hilariously distasteful slap-stick movies.Watch it with an open mind, and the plot will suck you in before you knows it. There's a certain amount of gore and violence, not excessive though. Nicely shot scenes and generally tight plot.My only issue is the ending, but that said aside, it is much because I was expecting something more at the end. Otherwise, a great movie which I'll recommend for all Mr Vampire series fans.
victoric I am a fan of Chinese Vampire/Ghost stories, and it has been long since last movie of the same kind, so it was a MUST on my watch-list. I was definitely attracted by the trailer. This is the most seriously produced Chinese Vampire story I have ever seen. I like how they put Vampire and Ghost together. It also grabs the sense how its like when they are hunting you down. The movie has a very nice visual; the shots are beautiful. However, the plot is kind of slow and unclear. It takes about 30 minutes to lineup the story, and the beautiful shots kind of slow it down. Once it gets to the transforming/fighting part, it is all good.A few things not making sense. Why the father/private tutor suddenly wanted to raped one of the twins while the environment was not secured? Why all the sudden Chin Siu-Hou became a hero like character and fight? What does Cheap Chan's plate do indeed after it was filled with blood?
