Pacino and DeNiro, an unbeatable combination but then add a load of A list actors and you have a recipe for a seriously good movie. A clever story with an unexpected twist, generally well acted and well worth watching. Retained for future viewing.

While this may not be one of my favorite performances by De Niro and Pacino, it is still worth the watch. It is reminiscent of Pacino's role as Serpico (1973) and of any number of current TV crime dramas. Robert De Niro (Turk), Al Pacino (Rooster), Brian Dennehy (Lt. Hingis), Donnie Walberg (Det. Riley), and 50 Cent (Spider) are among the cast of characters. If you're a mystery fan you will have guessed the "whodunit," within the first 15 minutes of this film. Just be sure not to leave the room thinking you'll be able to catch up with the plot when you return. You may be able to guess the "who" early on, but it may take a while to figure out the "why."

Righteous Kill (2008): Dir: Jon Avnet / Cast: Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Carla Gugino, Curtis Jackson, Donnie Wahlberg: Here is a thriller that brings together two of the biggest icons of their generation. This is perhaps the first time since The Godfather, Part 2 that we had these two actors in the same film. Film asks questions regarding justice. Robert De Niro and Al Pacino play veteran cops out to solve a string of crimes, each involving the slaying of vicious criminals. Clever plot that details the slayings as oppose to falling into repetition. Third act presents an interesting plot twist that thankfully doesn't act on revenge. De Niro and Pacino are very good together in roles that are not what they seem. Carla Gugino plays an investigator whom loves sadomasochistic sex. Unfortunately the role isn't that broad and plays more as a sex tease than a personality. Curtis Jackson plays a drug lord in what shouldn't be a surprise. Jackson does what he can with what is nothing more than a standard role of little interest. Donnie Wahlberg is also featured as another detective. Directed by Jon Avnet with a flair of paranoia. Avnet previously directed Pacino in the underrated 88 Minutes as well as the pathetic Up Close and Personal, which is a film that should be buried under a ton of rock. Despite its message, the film seems primed for two respected actors in an average yet entertaining thriller. Score: 8 / 10

Robert De Niro and Al Pacino are arguably the two greatest actors of their generation, so when they get together to do any scene there tends to be magic in the air. "Heat" was everything you could want from this collaboration and more, it gave these two acting powerhouses the podium they deserved because it had so much more going for it than just the acting. "Righteous Kill" on the other hand, it just sorta glides by without really capturing much of your interest throughout. Its two aging detectives trying to locate a serial killer (but maybe it's one of them?) while talking in occasionally witty one-liners, there's not much more to it than that. The leads sell it quite well, but they really have to drag this one out of the swamp. Their co-stars are just boring, the story seemed predictable to me (some say it's full of surprises, more power to them) and the blandly dark cinematography doesn't leave much room for putting anyone in the spotlights, but as I said, you can't make a bad movie when you have Pacino and De Niro at your disposal. It's just weird to me that they chose this project particularly, there must be so many better scripts laying around for the both of them. But oh well, before they start doing those I guess "Righteous Kill" is a pretty good time-waster.
