James Payton is a gruff Atlanta cop determined to bring down Omar, a crime boss who is so secretive that many doubt he really exists. Ben Barber is a school security guard who spends his free time playing video games... he is also living with Payton's sister and hopes to marry her. Barber successfully applies to the Police Academy so Payton invites him to spend a day with him learning what it means to be a cop... hoping that it will lead to him changing his mind. He asks the dispatcher to send him to the most annoying calls; asking bikers to move from a handicapped parking zone, dealing with a drunk in a market and asking a child to divulge the whereabouts of his criminal brother. A stop at a shooting range provides an unexpected lead to Omar. Before the day is over things are going to get far more dangerous than either man expected. This isn't the greatest of police comedies but it still provides a decent number of laughs and a solid enough central story. Ice T and Kevin Hart are fun as Payton and Barber; two very contrasting characters. It is very easy to believe that Payton really doesn't like his prospective brother in law... admittedly Barber is one of those characters who are amusing in a film but would be infuriating in real life. It is Hart who brings most of the laughs as Barber gets caught up in events that he doesn't really understand. The action is decent enough with a fun little car chase at the start and a good shootout and explosion at the end. There aren't too many surprises but that isn't really a problem as the hunt for Omar is there so we can see our protagonists in a dangerous situation rather than just the early 'Code 126' annoying callouts. Overall this certainly isn't up there with the likes of 'Beverly Hills Cop' or 'Lethal Weapon' but it is better than some of their sequels... not a must see but fun if you enjoy the genre.

This is a movie that I was not particularly excited to see. I did not hear much about it at all. All I knew about it is that it is a buddy-cop movie, that follows a very generic structure, which turns into a very predictable movie.Kevin Hart plays a rookie police academic who, in order to prove his worthiness to his girlfriends brother, played by Ice Cube, has to go on a ride along. That's the basic plot of the movie, and it is one which is not anything new. That's the thing about this movie, it is something that most of us have seen before, and honestly, it wasn't even very funny. I found it mildly amusing though, mostly due to the chemistry between Hart and Ice Cube, which was good enough to keep me entertained. Laurence Fishburne also plays quite well in this film. The jokes were not terrible, they just weren't very funny, I did laugh at one or two moments, but that was it. Overall it was OK. It wasn't great or terrible, but just OK. If you're ever bored with nothing to do and feel like watching a buddy cop movie, by all means, watch it, but don't expect anything great.

It just wasn't that funny. The plot was weak at best and rife with clichés. From start to finish it stayed at a consistent mediocre level. For a movie filled with talented and usually hilarious actors I just don't know what happened. It had nothing to do with the fact that the idea has been done to death, the jokes just weren't funny. The characters needed to be more lovable and endearing. It wasn't until the very end that I started to see the chemistry between Ice Cube and Kevin Hart. Too late in my opinion. The strangest thing is that they made a second one of this movie. Who knows maybe it will be better since it seems to have a storyline to carry it.

Ride Along begins with a shootout and car chase action sequence undermined first by ineptly utilized slow motion shots that blunt the narrative momentum, then second by confusing flash edits cut so quick, you can't always tell who's shooting at whom and where everyone actually is in relation to everyone else.Ben (Kevin Hart) wants to be a cop on the Atlanta P.D. So when he's accepted into the police training academy, James (Ice Cube) concocts his own test of manhood guaranteed to prove the immature Ben to be unworthy of his sister.James takes Ben on a ride along for his shift, only James rigs the calls so that he and Ben will be sent on the "26s," cop code for crazy people in nutty situations. Apparently, Atlanta P.D. doesn't worry about liability issues when it comes to sending civilians along with cops on potentially dangerous calls.
