The remake of prom night seemed like a great way to fix the disco era music video feel and style while still keeping the suspenseful cult horror atmosphere for a new generation in love with old school movie. Instead it was a remake in name only about a girl named Donna being stalked by her obsessed teacher who will do anything to have her. While it takes the supposed suspect in the original as the villain he's neither freaky, memorable or poses a danger to his beloved. Instead it takes all the clichés you come to expect and hams it into a bland colorful coming of age teen movie. The rating prevented any bloody carnage, sex scenes or drug used the original never shied away from squandering any chance for a successful remake.None of the actors, besides Brittany Snow, offered any worth wild performances and are written so poorly you stop caring if they live or die. Donna is the only one capable of emotion, has a great personality and I felt the fear and horror she went through making her survival a treat. The only praise besides that is the opening family massacre which set the mood wonderfully and if it followed that throughout it would've been on the same level as scream.

I can honestly say that I actually really enjoyed watching this movie. I honestly don't care that this movie was 100% full of clichés but I actually like movies that are like that. Yeah it may not be good, but its at least very enjoyable, well to me at least. its a movie, like the remake of Black Christmas, thats usually watched for more entertainment than actually being watched intently and carefully for a storyline or whatever. Once again, its a movie that I actually really liked, and i can say there were some few times that I actually saw some pretty good acting and ideas but were just executed terribly. I'd say its decent, not amazing, but not horrible in my opinion.

Gifted director Nelson McCormick has simply done an inspired job of bringing J.S. Cordone's brilliant screenplay to the screen. The shocks and thrills come fast and furiously from the very opening scene to the shattering climax. However, it is the sensitively observed portrait of a traumatized young girl going through a profound life transition that makes this motion picture so much more than a horror film. The film has its share of blood and gore but it never diminishes the development of the central character. A superb performance by Brittany Snow brings depth and humanity to her role of Donna Keppel and it is a deeply moving portrayal. Certainly a unique genre film as it departs from the expected and will surprise audiences in many ways.

...that's the best way to describe 2008's "Prom Night," which isn't a remake of the 1980 film. Brittany Snow plays the protagonist hounded by an ex-teacher who's psycho-obsessed with her. He escapes from prison and goes on a killing spree at the grand hotel where the prom is held. Jessica Stroup and Scott Porter are on hand as friends of the protagonist.Being a PG-13 film there's not much gore, but I could care less because I'm more concerned with how interesting the story & characters are and not how much blood & guts are shown. While this is a well-done production -- costing $20 million -- the story & characters are only mildly interesting. The film never rises above mediocre to become something great or even good, but at least it's decent mediocre. For comparison, every single Friday the 13th film is more entertaining. Despite this, "Prom Night" was a minor hit at the box office, pulling in well over twice it's expense in the USA alone. Go figure.Practically the entire movie takes place in a grand hotel, shot at the Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles. The flyover views of the spectacular bridge were shot in Newport, Oregon. The film runs 89 minutes.GRADE: C+
