"Private Resort" is a very typical mid 1980's comedy, much in the footsteps of "Porkys" for instance. The story in the movie is about two young men, Ben (played by Rob Morrow) and Jack (played by Johnny Depp) who are visiting a Florida resort where they hope to meet women. But the two young men will find more than just love here, as they are caught up in a web of deceit, trickery, an attempted jewel robbery, booze, and romance.I will say that the story is not the most well thought through of plot lines, but it did prove entertaining enough. Just bear in mind that this is right off the assembly line of mid 1980's comedies. The cast was actually quite good, aside from Johnny Depp and Rob Morrow, then there was also some good performances by Hector Elizondo and Leslie Easterbrook. If you grew up watching the movies in the 1980's then you should know these names, if not by name, then by face. The comedy throughout the movie was like a roller-coaster, at times it was great and hilarious, other times it wasn't all right there.I am rating "Private Resort" 5 out of 10 stars, because it wasn't a memorable movie, and it was just right between good and poor, so mediocre might be the right word here.

This is a lesser member of the 80s sex romp genre. It's the second film of the yet unknown Johnny Depp. That's the only reason I checked it out. It's a T&A romp in a Florida resort and hotel. Confident Jack (Johnny Depp) and his more reserved friend Ben (Rob Morrow) have fun and hijinx trying to hook up with all the hot young women. They constantly run into jewel thief 'The Maestro' (Hector Elizondo), the resort manager, and the jerk Curt (Andrew Dice Clay).Girls, I'll tell you up front that you absolutely see Depp's butt. He struts around naked and so does Morrow. Clay slaps the guys around. There are some slapstick. It's exactly what you expect and none of it is terribly funny but it is somewhat cute. It's all very silly and stupid. The only thing to raise this above all the other pointless '80s sex romp is the combo of Johnny Depp and Rob Morrow. They are a couple of fun guy buddies. They are a likable charismatic duo. Without them, I couldn't possibly give this a 6/10.

All the slapstick had me rolling as did the deadpan acting. Pure cheese with a lot of eye candy for guys and gals (including Depp's naked rear... which did nothing for me, but ladies probably will enjoy). Depp had more of a supporting role in this. The scenarios were funny and moved well from one to the next, but they probably only did one take for everything because each scene was contrived and poor in execution. The dialog is horrendously bad, poorly written. This movie literally had me laughing much more often than most recent films. The wannabe Sean Penn was annoying as was the grandmother. To me, the Barber and Reeves are the funniest characters; their brawl in the elevator was so absurd... God, I think this needs to be out there, this movie should be watched, which is why I am wasting these two last lines simply to comprise the required ten. Hope it helps. If not, screw you. Haha.

If you're looking for a serious film, or an engaging storyline, this is not it. But if you're looking for a bit of daft fun, or want to chuckle at the young Depp in one of his earliest films, then it's worth a watch. It's packed with cheap laughs, slapstick and crude humour. A bit of light-hearted fun that kept me entertained, even if it was somewhat predictable. Comedy chases around the hotel, 2 guys chasing every visible bit of skirt and landing in hot water every time and baddies getting their comeuppance. That about sums it up.It's not a 'bad' film by any means, just a bit of 80's cheese that needs to be taken in the manner intended.
