Paul Magne Haakonsen Normally, I am not overly keen on the abundance of re-makes that seem to be spewed out of Hollywood in the past many years. However, this re-make was actually one of the better re-makes to make it out of Hollywood. "Poseidon" has great special effects, which really help to bring the movie to life on the screen. And the movie started out in a great speed almost from the very beginning. It has a rather intense storyline, which keeps going at a good pace throughout the entire movie. There is a good pace to the storyline and it doesn't become dull or boring at any time.It had a good cast ensemble, with lots of familiar faces. Some people had small roles and were hardly utilized enough, and that was a shame. This 2006 re-make did, however, suffer from having a rather predictable script and storyline. So there were little twists and surprises along the way. But still, it was quite an entertaining movie.
cinemajesty After providing the masses with new century entertainment with "The Perfect Strom" (2000) and "Troy" (2004), the third movie for Warner Bros. Pictures since the millennium; "Poseidon" directed by Wolfgang Petersen at the age of 64 can not exceed the original "The Poseidon Adventure" (1972), which it intentionally should have with an high-end Hollywood special effects team, a cast stretching from actor Kurt Russell to Richard Dreyfuss, yet mismatching actor Josh Lucas with the fictitious character of Dylan Johns and female parts completely underdeveloped, stuffed with unchallenged actresses from Emmy Rossum to Mia Maestro, in a screenplay by writer Mark Protosevich, which seems have no basic instinct survival conflicts between the characters implanted into the story-line with all changed up names and character origins as the original novel from 1969 by Paul Gallico (1897-1976) suggested and at least had been modestly set into action by 1972er version starring Gene Hackman as Reverend Scott and Ernest Borgnine as the character of Rogo under the direction of Ronald Neame (1911-2010). Here in the 2006er version, everything had been sacrificed for a special effects showcase of stereotype characters in which the character of Robert Ramsey, performed with no further means by actor Kurt Russell, has his introduction in correcting his daughter Jennifer Ramsey of not making out with her boy-friend publicly, while having a glass of single malt whiskey in the five-star-suit of the title-given cruise liner, before entering the cold water of the Atlantic ocean without reaching the surface ever again, asking where the writer of "The Cell" (2000) has dropped his thrill-set to hover the audience at least for 90 Minutes over a sleep-tight-in-your-auditorium-seat of a movie.© 2017 Felix Alexander Dausend (Cinemajesty Entertainments LLC)
valeripaxtonsteele I have heard people criticizing the dialogue, primarily, but I don't think that is the problem. The actors were fine, the CGI good (not remarkable) and even the dialogue was not terrible. I think it was the lack of character development. There is no one you are really rooting for. There is no dramatic tension, like in the original between Rogo and the preacher. There is no great love, like Manny's and Belle's. No super-smart munchkin to put in his two cents. The timid one in the remake is just not believable, whereas you could tremble along with Nonnie. The characters are two dimensional, and there is nothing to pull you in, to make you care. I know the original has an extra 20 minutes over this remake. I wonder if that extra 20 minutes would have made a difference here? Props to Josh Lucas, Richard Dreyfuss, Emmy Rossum, Fergie & Kirk B.R. Woller, for doing what they could with what they were given.
sgholbrook First thing to note is the CGI, animation and stunts in this film are top notch ! I love these sort of films, which provide a simple story, set in one location, yet the ideas in it are gripping ! This was done very well and in a great time limit too, some of the ideas kinda felt very mainstream but some others really stood out in their own way (whether that's how a ship actually works logically, I can't say) but I would like to imagine it does ! This was a fun casual film to watch.... Nothing bad or amazing about it, it's simply a movie worth watching. The time that went into creating sets for this must have been a LONG time, as considering most of the film the ship is upside down, the attention to detail of the background and the physics to it all had to be 100%. Didn't spot a fault with it myself, that took some doing ! Worth the watch, go check it out, even though I did watch it the day my parents left for their first ever cruise !
