OllieSuave-007 This is the first movie in the Hong Kong action comedy series Pom Pom. Richard Ng and John Sham play detectives Chau and Beethoven, who go through misadventures to protect a young girl from a crime lord, as she possesses a ledger that contains all of the gangster's nefarious activities. As with many Hong Kong comedies, after the main plot is identified, many subplots are inserted to give the film added intrigue. This is evident in this film, but the direction by Tung Cho 'Joe' Cheung keeps much of the story intact and easy to follow. Ng and Sham has a sometimes frustrated partnership, but their teamwork and chemistry are delightfully depicted and funny to watch - from them chasing a suspected killer around a bathhouse wearing nothing but towels to a thrilling car chase in heavy traffic. Ng and Sham also does some clever comedy, such as playing pranks on their colleagues, Chau trying to entertain policewoman Anna at his home while to hide an unknown prostitute, and several slapstick puns. The acting is spot-on and not over-the-top. It's a fine Hong Kong comedy and was a favorite in my childhood days. However, I just wished that ***spoiler ahead*** the detectives would have been given more credit in the drug case toward the end. ***spoiler ends*** Grade B
crossbow0106 Although watchable due to some fun scenes of comic choreography, this is a mostly a nonsense buddy comedy about two bumbling cops Chau (Richard Ng) and Beethoven (John Sham). I'm sure the goal was to just make a likable comedy which would be profitable, but the storyline is almost an afterthought. This created a sequel, too. The two cops are always getting into trouble, confounding others etc. Mostly, women are treated only as objects, with the exception of Deanie Yip, who likes Chau. Watch this film knowing that the goal is purely to entertain, not blow you away. Its an non-essential film, but its not an abomination. Check it out, but don't expect much.
