I love black comedy. I even like dumb movies. But this one thinks it is more than it is, ad therefore deserves a really low rating. It isn't funny in the least. There is not one likable character. Well I guess the coffee girl. But manly it's just a bunch of loud, misfires rolling by, one after another. No sense of reason in he story line. Take the Danny McBride series, the Sasha Cohen films, there is a story line, and one scene follows another for a reason. I couldn;t figure out what this was about. Ray Liotta's character?? Pena ? Who does Seth Rogen know in H'wood that he keeps getting all these films made? He is lame to the max. I did think it was funny that the flasher was very...small.

So, if you're used to Seth Rogan's films you'll probably expect a stoner comedy, written on rizla with all the wit and class of a billionaire US president...However, this is a genuinely good film. It's dark - with an offbeat sensibility, but, I highly recommend it it if you haven't had a lobotomy and can appreciate a subtlety you won't often see - especially from it's lead.It has a disgustingly low score here - probably because mouth breathers are expecting something like the cinematic equivalent of opium...this reminded me more of something akin to the Cornetto trilogy...you'll like it if you get half the jokes, but if you can pick up on underlying humour then I think you'll like it more. Not necessarily a cerebral movie, but definitely above average and a hidden gem for those who have seen the same thing over and over from the likes of Happy Madison et al.

I'm writing this review after a second viewing of Observe and Report. I've always been a fan of Seth Rogan's light-hearted (if adult) humour, so when I first saw this, I was a little let down. The cuddly fat man we can't help but root for has been replaced here by a bi-polar mall security guard who's temper frequently gets him into trouble. It wasn't until the second viewing (when I wasn't expecting some sort of sweet-natured feel-good comedy, like the 40 Year Old Virgin or Knocked Up) that I really appreciated it. I also like my humour dark. And, if you're in the mood for something pretty grisly and taboo-breaking, you may just get something out of this. Basically, if you haven't laughed in the first ten minutes, turn it off and watch something more mainstream. As I mentioned earlier, Rogen plays Ronnie Barnhardt, a mall security guard with delusions of grandeur. He thinks he's the hero, but the audience knows otherwise - which is where most of the humour derives from. He also has bi-polar disorder - a mental condition that means he's quite tolerable one minute (and we, the audience, can also unwittingly think the 'old lovable' Rogen is back. Then, cut to the next scene and he's battering some kid with a skateboard.Observe and Report is laden with poignancy and subtle humour. Basically, only watch if you're in the mood for black comedy and laced with taboos. Nothing is sacred here - expect racism, full frontal male untidy, date rape and plenty of violence and mental illness. If you think you can find the funny side to all that, Observe and Report may just be for you.Besides, it has a wicked soundtrack (if you're into classic rock).http://thewrongtreemoviereviews.blogspot.co.uk/

Seth Rogan is a Security Guard at a mall who just takes his job to seriously. He has some mental problems and is in love with this shallow girl who works at one of the department stores, played by Anna Ferris, who is the only slightly funny thing in the whole movie. She plays a good drunk. I didn't really expect a lot from this movie and it delivered even less than I thought. It was just not fun at all. I expect more from Seth Rogan. He's doing the best with the material he has, but it's not much. I don't think I laughed once during the movie. Michael Pena and Ray Liota are in it too and they are good for what they have too. These are all good actors that just made a bad choice.
