Spirited nunsploitation from Koyu Ohara, the director of "White Rose Campus: Then, Everybody Gets Raped!" Well, here's more rape-themed pink. After a blushing bride is raped on her wedding night by a bunch of thugs, her husband rejects her (in the grand Japanese tradition) and she contemplates suicide. She is saved at the last minute by a priest who invites her to join a convent on the edge of town. This convent is not your ordinary convent, it is a haven for hot lesbians in habits. These women spend their nights fondling each other and their days (yes, days!) visiting Tokyo discos and getting picked up by horny boys who don't take no for an answer. Into this scenario comes a man searching for his lost sister and a bizarre religious ritual involving rich men who pay to have sex/rape with a woman dressed as a sheep. The plot is typically bizarre for a Nikkatsu production and the performances are strong. Some of the sex scenes are mighty erotic, especially the lesbian trysts, which are numerous. Ohara has a shameless, perky film-making style that elevates sleaze to a gentle, perverse art. Although this film is inferior to Suzuki's masterful "Convent of the Holy Beast", it is still a must-see for fans of lesbians, nuns, and vaginas.

Not as one might assume from the title, a bondage movie, but even more strangely, a Japanese nunsploitation. Told gleefully, as if by Bunuel, this torrid little saga begins with a wedding. But be not mislead, before the marriage can be consummated, baddies break in and tie up Mr, forcing him to watch the vigorous rape of Mrs (who doesn't seem too put out). She's upset afterwards though because her man prevents her from phoning the police lest his reputation be destroyed, and casts her out the house. Needless to say she ends up in a convent getting more of the same. Lots of sex, some bondage and whippings but best of all a glorious orgiastic climax with the star of the show taken from behind dressed as a lamb by a business man in a mask.

In terms of "classic" exploitation cinema, and specifically in regards to the pinku and nunsploit genres - WET AND ROPE is not the "best of the best" (a spot that I still hold for SCHOOL OF THE HOLY BEAST) - but this film does try pretty damn hard. A ridiculously fun and bizarre entry in a fun and bizarre genre - WET AND ROPE is definitely one of the more entertaining pinku (or any genre for that matter) films I've seen in a while.A young woman is raped in front of her husband by a group of thugs on her wedding night. Her husband kicks her to the curb, stating that his "honor has been ruined" (a trend I see often amongst rape-victims in these films...), so the new wife decides to commit suicide. She is stopped right before plunging off a cliff to her demise by a seemingly kind priest who says she can join his nunnery and God will heal all. Of course, once inside, the nunnery is filled with lesbionic, hot-dog-bun-f!cking nymphos who want nothing more than to screw guys and go to the "Diskotek" in full nun regalia (?!?!). Add in some strange side characters and plots, including a toilet bowl licking, Igor-like "assistant", an overly horny priest and abbess, a man on the run from a robbery, some clueless cops, and the absolute best part - the festival of St. Animal (???) where well-paying businessman come to dress up in Negro masks and screw all the nuns, while one lucky "winner" gets to bone one DRESSED AS A SHEEP (???!!!????!!!!). For real - I couldn't make this sh!t up if I tried...I honestly find it hard to believe that the Japanese could cram so much material into 65 (or so) minute films. It's another reason I love the pinku genre so much - lots of craziness condensed into a manageable time-frame, so you rarely have a chance to be bored. Finer points like character development and continuity may end up lost in the shuffle - but who watches exploit films for that stuff anyway? WET AND ROPE isn't the best pinku or nunsploit film out there, but it is an infectiously fun entry for fans of either genre, or for anyone looking for something deliriously different...8/10

I have to give Koyu Ohara's 'Wet Rope Confession' a high rating because among other things, it is an utterly unique and fascinating viewing experience. Here is one of the oddest 'pink' films of all time, concerning a beautiful young woman who joins a bizarre convent after being raped on her wedding night, by a gang of thugs. Loaded with surreal imagery and filmed with great style, director Koyu O'Hara utilizes garish colors especially well, and some scenes are truly gorgeous. Other scenes are quite indescribable, such as when the young woman Miki, and a fellow nun enter a disco in the middle of the afternoon and are picked up by some shady looking characters. Some scoff at the bizarre imagery here, but I believe everything has it's meaning. Symbolism is in fact the dominating factor in this one. The ending is especially bizarre, but somehow extremely sweet and romantic at the same time, as actress Yuki Nohira possesses a rare quality of appearing very sexual and also totally naive and innocent at the same time. The acting, as in most of the Japan 'pink' films of this time, is extremely good. The film-makers touch on a very obscure but potent erotic nerve by showing nuns in sexual situations, while appearing to enjoy the experience while simultaneously being disturbed by what they are doing. Fans of cult cinema should have a very special appreciation for these films, for before the advent of DVD productions like 'Wet Rope' were absolutely unheard of outside of their native land. The 1970's were truly a great time for underground cinema, and 'Wet Rope Confession' is a nice example of what that decade had to offer. See this mysterious and beautiful film!
