This film is based on a real life event that took place in India , a girl named jessica (sister of vidya balan in this film) was killed by a son of a political leader . Just like other countries in subcontinent , where justice is often hurried or buried in relation to what kind of people was involved in crime , so the son of leader who killed jessica, was kind of sure to escape justice . this was reflected and confirmed when all the 300 people who were present at the time of killing, denied to come before the court in the fear of political leader's power.

I of-course went for this film only to witness the power-house performances by two of my favorite divas Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan, prepared to be blown away, that I was most certainly, plus it was a treat for me and my friends watching Rani play a journalist as we all were Mass Media students. But I was surprised by what this film had to offer. It was equally poignant, thrilling and emotional, while in some parts it was extremely hilarious, shocking and moving, thus being a perfect entertainer and yet something more than just a one time watch, something which was equally thought provoking and inspiring.Post the watch I did a thorough research on the events shown in the film and I was pleased to learn that the film had done proper justice to the actual events something which many directors fail to master when it comes to 'based on true story' films, but then I don't expect anything less from Director Raj Kumar Gupta. The little symbolical hints like when Sabrina (Vidya) is passing a truck while in a cab, which has this road sign saying 'Men at Work' (thus referring to the kind of work Men are upto in covering up the actual events)and a few more are just brilliant and the music though unconventional is apt for the mood set by the film. The film isn't that technically sound and the court scenes towards the end though a bit of a let down but overall it is certainly a good film. But I really didn't understand the need for Gaalis!I also happened to get the film on DVD for my sister and she also fell in love with the film, and she like me also thinks that this film on IMDb is most certainly under-rated! No One Killed Jessica is not just another cheap cashing on a true event film, its engaging, moving and a thematically balanced film and though commercial it is perhaps equally a Parallel/Art film which now is one of my absolute contemporary favorites for all the right reasons.

It is great to see these kinds of movies coming out of Bollywood of late (thanks to Ronnie Screwwala -- its amazing how many gems have this guy produced of late!) Direction is pretty good, nice follow up to Aamir. 8/10. The topic itself is not really new or novel. Another Raj Kumar (Santoshi) has brought similar social themes via movies in the past (to great effect, one might say). Really good attention to details such as the air-hostess's dress or Windows 98 computer in the news director's office. Amit Trivedi/Amitabh Bhattachrya music/lyrics combo was brilliant once again (after Dev D).Two impressive performances -- Rani is near flawless as always. The guy who portrays the PI who first investigated the case also stands out. The rest of the cast was okay, Vidya was under par, I thought. I thought the movie would have been better if the reason/circumstances surrounding the murder had not been shown at all (the scene at the night club/bar). I don't think the first two scenes were entirely necessary. Let the moron have his drink for chrissake! Whats a few milliliters of alcohol? The guy shot the ceiling already and you're still gonna argue with this imbecile! There is absolutely no way to condone a murder such as this one, but the scene at the bar does not do any favors to the memory of Jessica, it is what it is, I guess...Overall the movie is depressing; if eye witnesses can indeed be bought off like this, it bodes really poorly for the future of India as a culture and society. As Rani said "ours is a soft state, na?"). I thought that was in stark contrast with the Indian military pushing back the terrorists and the pakistani army at Tiger mountains (Kargill). In the end the case had a just resolution, but majority of such cases don't go "viral" with the media or resonate with the populace -- in most cases like these justice is often denied.

After a long time, there's finally a Hindi film that has been worth the hours. I did not have to use the fast-forward button at all (which was the case with most Hindi films I watched recently) and I was engaged from start to end. Raj Kumar Gupta's 'No One Killed Jessica' is based on the murder of aspiring model Jessica Lall who was brutally shot at a party (in front of 300 witnesses) because she refused to serve drinks. Many directors have used this news in their films while failing to do any justice in telling the story. At the start of the film there's already a disclaimer that even though the film was based on true events, many things have been dramatized and some even fictionalized. Yet, not once did 'No One Killed Jessica' feel lacking in realness where portrayal and storytelling is concerned except maybe towards the end it arguably felt slightly dramatic. Gupta tries to keep it as stark as possible. You even hear characters cussing and swearing (yes, the 'F' word is used here) and it's never overdone. The writing is solid. Characters in such films tend to end up appearing as caricatures but here all the characters are beautifully written. Gupta's attention to detail is brilliant. The way he depicts passage of time by referencing films and news items is cleverly done. With excellent cinematography, editing, lighting, and background score, 'No One Killed Jessica' is a very well made film.Rani Mukherjee and Vidya Balan are at their best. Balan seems to be making some very wise choices. She performed excellent in one of my favourite movies of 2010, 'Ishqiya' and here she is again in a restrained performance as Jessica's sister fighting for justice. It's finally great to see Mukherjee step out of her comfort zone and do something challenging for a change. The actress performs naturally. Newcomer Myra Karn is competent in the title role. Most of the rest of the cast do nothing short of a fine job. With 'No One Killed Jessica', 2011 seemed to be off to a good start. While many films tend to use true stories to make money, this one at least does justice in its storytelling and respects the people it is based on and the truth. I did not watch Gupta's debut film 'Aamir' because it was a rip-off but he's proved that he has potential to make great movies and I hope he stays on this track.
