I remember watching this as a kid and enjoyed it, so I was curious to see if still held up and for the most part it did. Set in a South Pacific that never really existed and cutting fairly loose with history, it was still a fun adventure with plenty of action and some memorable characters. A little cheesy in places but you expect that in a movie like this. If I was to have any criticism the movie's beginning kind of robs any suspense of what happens to the crew in the rest of the movie and given Hayes relationship with his crew during the main adventure, he seems pretty blasé about what happens to them at the start, it was at odds with how he was portrayed for the most part. That said a good fun adventure.

I finally watched this movie for the second time last time being when, I was 10 years old and it was very well done. It was funny to see Tommy lee Jones character as a privateer more than a ruthless Pirate, even himself he questioned the term Pirate with the man writing a somewhat half bio on his life. He seemed to be a opportunistic character who dabbled in everything from legal to mildly illegal activities as he states. I throughly enjoyed Capt. Ben Pease's character ruthless and funny a true pirate and slave trader. i would love to have seen a further adventure of Ben Pease's character and crew. The only thing, I did not like about the movie was how Tommy Lee Jones abandoned his crew amongst the Indian natives when the deal went sour, it did not seem like his character to run away leaving them to fight it out alone and die only himself to be rescued by the preacher and his wife later on from a noose. I do not see anything that this movie ripped off from Indiana Jones or any real comparisons except for the bridge scene which Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom ripped off from this movie. The title of the movie is very gay and weak, I guess Savage Island is a much better title for the movie. I am waiting for The Island (Pirate movie) starring Michael Caine and David Warner to come to DVD who knows what the hold up is???

I was lucky enough to go to the European premiere of this film in London ( although strangely enough i seem to remember that it ended up on a double bill with TOP SECRET in some cinemas). Made before Tommy Lee Jones became a big star it was quite obviously the inspiration for Pirates of the Caribbean. It was released in the UK under the title SAVAGE ISLANDS but in some places it was called NATE & HAYES. However, shame on Paramount for not exploiting it better. I know they had a lot riding on the not dissimilar Indiana Jones films but this is a cracking adventure and deserves better treatment (and why oh why has it not been seen on UK television for about 15 years?).Good news though. The film is finally getting a DVD release (on region 1 only) on June 20th 2006 so keep an eye out for it.

One gets the impression that Gloria Katz and Willard Huyck were in the adjoining office at Universal Studios with drinking glasses up against the wall, listening in on the story conferences for Nate and Hayes. Both this wonderful adventure film and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom were released the same year by the same studio, both have rope bridges hanging over ravines, cults and the feats of daring do... But Nate and Hayes is much more fun (for a smaller budget) and in the spirit of those serials...
