ironhorse_iv Try to swallow this. Adapted from a comic book by Dark Horse Comics, this R rated film sees B-List Movie actor Bruce Campbell being mistaken for a real-like monster hunter and forced to fight a real Chinese monster, Guan-Di in a small town in Oregon. Directed by Bruce Campbell, the movie is freaky deaky. It's not that good of a movie, but it was fun enough to watch. You really have to turn off your brain to get through the movie. There are tons of extreme meta-humor parody, here and most of it kinda works. Some of the in-jokes are slightly clever while others are just too blunt and insult the audience's intelligence. The film was made, cheaply to capitalize on that low budget meta-humor. The exteriors for the town of "Goldlick" were actually shot on Bruce Campbell's property where a back lot was built with the exteriors of all of the buildings. The interior shots were all done on a sound stage. The monster demon looks pretty fake looking, with a lots of unrealistic-looking gore to add to the over the top violence. Still, the plot written by Mark Verheiden & Bruce Campbell, was pretty interesting. It's rare to see actors played highly fictionalized version of themselves. For the most part, Bruce Campbell as Bruce Campbell was very entertaining with all with wits. So, kinda hail to the king, baby! The only thing, I didn't like about his character is how much, he lacks depth and act so mean-spirited. The bad thing about the story is that characters are written, in unsophisticated unlikeable ways that it's hard to get through the film. Most of the characters in the film, are jerks. I really didn't like any of the supporting cast, due to this. Women are written, so shallow-like, that it's a bit degrading. I feel bad, for the women in this film like Grace Thorsen. The Chinese Stereotypes are so offensive, that it's hard to get through. Seeing director Sam Raimi's younger brother, Ted Raimi act Asian was pretty insulting. It's worse than his other role in the film, as a Italian painter. I have to say, Guan-Di was a pretty cool villain. After all, you don't see, many Chinese ghosts haunting an America location. The whole bean curd gimmick was pretty OK for the most part. One thing, I love about the dialogue is all the mentions and references to Bruce Campbell's other films, such as 2002's Bubba Hotep, 1988's Maniac Cop & others. That was pretty much, the highlight of the film. Although Sam Raimi, with whom Bruce frequently collaborates, is not involved with this production, much of the film is in the vein of the Evil Dead series (1982-1992). I just wish, they mention more of his TV show, works like being a recurring characters in both the Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys series (1995-1999). Another good thing about the film is the song, 'The Legend of Guandi', by the McCain Brothers. It's a pretty catchy tune. The DVD extras are somewhat worth, buying the movie for. It was so funny to watch. The hour long Making-of documentary is one big inside joke with a lot of fake-history, awkward moments, and fake trailers for movies that will never, come out like Cave-alien 2. They even went so far, to make a behind the scenes documentary of the making of Cave-alien 2. It was so surreal. The DVD has also tons of Easter Eggs special features that you will have to check out. Lots of them, feature content that isn't worth watching, but it was still fun to find them. Supposedly, there's a sequel, as of this writing, on its way. It is in-titled, 'My Name is Still Bruce: Bruce vs. Frankenstein'. It might be OK, might not. So heads up on that. Overall: if you're a Bruce Campbell fan, you're going to see this movie regardless of what you read here; however, I'll save you the time and say it did has that pure id gonzo that keeps the spirit of 1980s grindhouse film mostly alive. If you like, those films, maybe you will love this. If not, the tiresome old jokes will kill you. In my opinion, it was watchable, but this film could have been better.
michal-havran The people who never liked or even knew BC will never understand this film. This film is the second BC effort as a director and not only actor after so-so Man with a Screaming Brain. I see many people bashing the film because of how "The filmmakers" described Bruce as a total whiner and looser... hey, did you even see who is that "filmmaker"?. It is Bruce Cambpell himself. And the film is self-irony humor done in an excellent way (like when the lady screams: You sucked in Moontrap). not everyone likes this kind of humor maybe, but I completely do (my kind of humor that goes well with my Zodiac sign). The special effects are top notch, the main villain is funny as hell (what can be more funny than God of War & bean curd). Actually the real Guan DI, or even Guan Yu (http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/324162/Guandi) is a real historical general and became god, and is still worshiped especially in southern parts of China, hong Kong, etc...What can I add, a great horror comedy (less horror, more comedy) for Bruce Cambpell fans
Jack Higginbotham Bruce Campbell is the man. A guy who has embraced his B-movie actor title and wore it with pride. Being the leading man of B-movies and having small cameos in big budget Hollywood films like 0Z, The Great And Powerful and the Spiderman series (all directed by frequent collaborator Sam 'Evil Dead' Raimi). My Name Is Bruce is a love-letter to the B- movie, a fun, over the top thrill ride starring none other that 'Famous' movie actor, Bruce Campbell. The film is so chock full of references to different B and horror movies that its hard to keep track of them all. From references to Campbells back catalog of movies to music from the likes of Psycho, the film always feels like a tribute and its a very loving tribute, with Bruce Campbell also directing, I expected nothing less.I think liking this film really has to do with how much you like Bruce Campbell as an actor. I love the guy, I like his humour, I like his style of acting, he's right up my street but then again I also like B- movies. So ask yourself, do I like Bruce Campbell? and do I like B- movies?. If the answers to those questions are yes then you are going to have a blast with My Name Is Bruce.
brendanfoy Yeah I know it's "sugar", but watching this movie is like eating a cake baked with salt instead of sugar. I like Bruce Campbell, I smile every time I see him in a film, on a T.V. show or in a commercial. He makes me laugh with his wisecracking humor and he's been in the type of B- movie guilty pleasures I'll always overrate thanks to his presence. The Evil Dead films happen to be some of my favorite horror films ever, particularly the second one which he played a large part in making special. Army of Darkness is a laugh riot goof ball comedy and no matter what his critics may say, I do feel he has plenty of acting ability to pull off more dramatic roles.Having said all that, I don't like this movie. It tries too hard to be funny and I think they approached it the wrong way. There was no need to make a spoof of Bruce Campbell or his films since so many of his films intentionally cast him knowing they are spoofing themselves. This movie is the equivalent of someone repeating a joke after everyone has already laughed at it, and then laughing at their own joke. It just didn't work for me overall, it would have made a much better short or a series of quick internet webisodes.Obviously every Bruce Campbell fan should check this out, I mean if you sat through Alien Apocalypse just for Bruce Campbell, then you can definitely make it through this. You may find it funny, humor is subjective, but this movie just didn't do it for me. I think if Bruce Campbell were going to spoof himself, it would have been funnier if they didn't use the whole supernatural element. Just have him be that wise cracker "Ash" in everyday life, telling off Hollywood Execs, hitting on young drunk celebrities, punching out the paparazzi and ordering his legion of fans to take out Shatner's legion of fans. Had they approached this the same way Bob Sagat makes fun of "himself" in Entourage it would have been true comedy gold. The movie was a disappointment for me, I got all the jokes since I am a die-hard Campbell fan yet they still flat, but I still say hail to the King!
