This was a hilarious movie that does a good job of bringing the tragicomical conflict of growing up Greek to the big screen. I was laughing the whole time. Yes, it got some flack from very traditional people who didn't like having the things they actually do in real life mocked in such a big way, but it was all in good fun. The only thing that my older neighbor (Kiria B....) complained about was the spitting. Occasionally she still complains, "No well-raised Greek actually spits, though we do make the sound 'Ftou Ftou' because of the mati...." I have the DVD and watch it almost every summer with family and friends. Very well cast with a solid plot and perfect timing with the humorous bits. Well done, Nia.

The IMDb rating is too low.As a simple rom-com, it is almost flawless.Sweet, entertaining, well-written, funny, interesting, it basically checks all the boxes. But when you also consider this was a breakout film for Nia Vardalos, who not only starred but wrote, it gets even better. The script is tight, yes, but the performance of Ms. Vardalos is even tighter.Have seen the film three times now and each time I marvel at how precise her comic timing is, her asides, her micro-expressions. A vastly under-rated performance.(For students of film, which is most of us, also worth noting is that once again we have Toronto streets being represented as a US city.) Highly recommended. Unfortunately cannot say the same for the sequel.

A young Greek woman falls in love with a non-Greek and struggles to get her family to accept him while she comes to terms with her heritage and cultural identity. Just saw my Big Fat Greek Wedding and as a Greek i thought it was excellent it respects the culture of my country but also it respects the things that we do as a country you know Easter, dance or even some Greek songs and lines. It also succeeds on the romance Nia Vardalos and John Corbett have a really great and sweet chemistry together that shows up in every scene. Also the families both of Toula and Ian are pretty hilarious especially the Greek family but also Ian's family who gets addicted with Ouzo by the end of the film. A very very great movie that even if you aren't a Greek i think you are going to like because it's a great movie in general.

nice. to strange. because it seems be , at first sigh, a lovely comedy, seductive mixture of clichés and stereotypes and a good dose of fresh air in the genre. but not always the way is the most inspired. because it represents an introduction in Greek community . and that option is rarely fair. the names, the atmosphere who seems more Italian, the Orthodox baptism who could offense each Christian Orthodox believer, the crazy situations and the absence of many traditions who defines the cultural identity of Greeks are pieces of a superficial manner to define the other. sure, Nia Vardalos saves the situation in many occasions. sure, it is only a comedy and the success is the basic purpose. sure, it is a Greek American family . but, maybe, it could be better. but it is only a small detail. because it is funny and lovely and original. and so simple. the clash of two communities. and the love who remains invincible.
