Must Love Dogs (2005) is one of the funniest romantic comedies I have ever seen. Every member of the cast fits their role so well. Diane Lane played the lead role very well, she brought kind of an innocent but also very fun vibe to her character. John Cusack was good playing Lane's romantic interest, and they had fairly good on screen romantic chemistry. Like I said, Cusack is good, but honestly this is Lane's film, she shines the most and most of the movie centers around her story and her characters deep inner struggles, and I liked it that way. Also in the cast, is one of my favorites, you may know her from Big (1988), Elizabeth Perkins. She plays Lane's sister here and she is just hilarious in this film, I laughed at her character every time she came on the screen, and that was so refreshing, because a lot of romantic comedies only focus on being sweet and forget that it's a romantic COMEDY, some parts are actually supposed to be humorous. This movie really understands that and it delivers. This movie has many very funny scenes with good characters, it's well written, and it also has that sweet/cute factor. Overall, it's a pretty lite movie, and it's also very enjoyable. I really recommend Must Love Dogs if you're looking for a worthwhile romantic comedy. 8/10.

If you are looking for a heartwarming, feel good comedy, this is the movie for you. It is a simple story but the best stories are the ones that have been done again and again but in different ways. This movie is full of laughs and has plenty of heart. It is very relatable, no matter what age you are. (though I would imagine young children would find this movie incredibly boring) The acting is terrific and the characters are all very lovable. I found John Cusack's character to be particularly charming and I definitely would have given him chance after chance! The one thing I found a little questionable was John Cusack's profession. Seemed a little odd and unbelievable that he could even make his rent/alimony payments if he wasn't making any money with his boats. But maybe it goes without saying that he had another source of income? Overall, this movie was very uplifting and is sure to give those who are feeling down some much needed hope.P.S. Is there a movie out there where Dermot Mulroney DOESN'T play the jerk? LOL I have yet to find one...

Mildly amusing date movie has Lane and Cusack meeting cute (in a dog park) and then taking the rest of the movie to actually get together. Lane plays a middle-aged divorcée being urged by her female and obligatory gay friends to get back into the dating scene. The dates she goes on are the funniest parts of the movie, especially one involving a sleazy guy who says to her, "I thought you'd be younger." He admits he wouldn't mind finding an 18 year old to date. The problem with the movie is that it isn't particularly well written, and depends way too much on Lane and Cusack's personalities to pull it off. The ending is a knockoff of about 100 other date movies, and is frankly disappointing. Christopher Plummer plays Lane's dad and Dermot Mulroney is a married womanizer on Lane's trail. Needless to say, Lane has done far better work. So has Cusack, who seems to spend most of the movie working on a wooden boat and watching "Dr. Zhivago."

I 'm a guy and I m not into rom coms but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Turns out IMDb users have rated it with 5.9. I 've decided that neither public opinion nor the critics are a good way to gauge a film, both are incredibly misguided, they don't have the appropriate intelligence, emotiveness, taste or flair. (!! HECK EVEN THE INBUILT IMDb DICTIONARY DOESN'T EVEN RECOGNISE THE WORD EMOTIVENESS AND THEY MARK IT IN THE PREVIEW AS A MISTAKE...they suggest that it be replaced with abortiveness, how about that for poetic irony) This might a bit on the harsh side but honesty has that tendency. Only a a friend whose taste you trust can really recommend a film. Anyway, I digressed enough. This is a sensitive, very well plotted and very funny film. I wasn't expecting this and I very positively surprised. First of all all the actors here give fantastic, even John Cussack who I thought had only been doing phone ins lately.Diane Lane, well what can you say about Ms. Lane, she's such a treat, such a dependable actress. Here she lets off her guard and delivers a very difficult performance (that of a woman growing older, being neurotic, being needy) in such a splendid way. She's so appealing here being so vulnerable. I thought no one could hold a candle to Diane Keaton in these types of roles but Lane here is a more mature Annie Hall for the 2000s. Actually the film is very Woody Allen-y in a lot of ways. The sublime Stockard Channing gives a fine performance too (what a fantastic comedienne, she could make watching paint dry entertaining, one of the truly great actors on the screen these days.), and so does Elizabeth Perkins, and the old master Christopher Plummer. But all the other characters are so well acted too. Absolutely fantastic casting here. Kudos for the direction here and of course the writing, there are some minor lines that gave me belly laughs. Most of them subtle and understated of course like much of this film. It seems unless you paint with these awful broad dramatic or comedic strokes people don't get it. And why would they. And what lovely dogs too!!A real unexpected treat this film, a fun, sensitive, silly and honest romantic comedy.
