Horst in Translation ([email protected]) "Mord in Eberswalde" or "Murder in Eberswalde" is a German television film from 2013, so 3 years old now, and as most German small screen releases, especially in the crime genre, it runs for approximately 90 minutes, slightly under. The director here is Stephan Wagner and the writer is Holger Karsten Schmidt and for both it is among the most known works of their careers. The lead actor is Ronald Zehrfeld and he is fairly famous right now because of his work with Christian Petzold. German film buffs will recognize a handful more familiar faces, such as Martin Brambach (a personal favorite of mine), Arved Birnbaum or Godehard Giese.This movie is the story of a police officer who is very focused on finding a child murderer who has committed several crimes already, even if very early on, the police officer looks like a killer himself with what he does to that woman. I must say I found these outbursts of violence fairly cringeworthy and they were an unsuccessful attempt in trying to lend Zehrfeld's character more shades. Unfortunately, overall, the story and plot (especially the details) weren't the film#s biggest strength. It is nothing that we haven't seen before, frequently better, and the fact that it plays in the GDR adds very little compared to what it could have added. References about the people saying people like the killer do not exist in that country. However, the actors all do a fairly convincing job and elevate the material a lot, which is why I eventually I give this film a positive verdict. Even if it's only cautiously positive for sure. See it.
