There is a real hater's review that caused me to write my own review. The prior guy, i_am_bryony, moaned and whined about how terrible EVERYTHING was. The sets, the acting, the writing, everything!
To give equal time to some sensible thought, I really enjoyed this movie, especially considering how few dollars were spent on production! I have read that it was made for $15,000 ! That alone is worthy of an award.
I applaud the under-use of monster reveals. You barely see them at all, but you know what they look like from crude drawings, presented in the context of the movie. Almost at t he very end, we actually meet one of them, and then see another alien interacting with the first alien. Their action was carefully very gentle.
The entire final sequence--night time at the deserted gas station--was completely haunting. I mean it. The remoteness, the feeling of being alone, and the total lack of protection--these things elicited a real feeling in me.
I think the write/director deserves HUGE kudos. I really like this little jewel of a film.

Don't waste your time. The movie is just so bad I was amazed somebody gave it 6.4. How can one possibly have a budget and then film such a trash? The main heroes are absolutely dumb, it is a truly mystery how they survive not only in a so called infected zone, but in a regular routine life. Ugh. Total garbage.

I bought this movie as a steelbook edition because I liked the front cover of the Blu-ray steelbook. Sometimes I don't get myself and buy movies only because of the great artwork on the covers. But..that aside. From minute one I'd like the movie and it grabbed my attention. Strong characters, great acting and realistic scenes. From moments I was thinking "what's going to happen?" "What will it bring them?" It was somehow mysterious.I believe Gareth Edwards made a good movie, however I'm a bit disappointing that the sequel was directed by someone else! Overall it was a great movie to watch and I keep it in my collection to watch it again.

Set in a future in which half of Mexico has been "infected" by giant aliens, two Americans try to cross the border and return to the United States in this alien invasion film with a difference. In an unusual move, the title creatures hardly ever appear on screen, something that makes their fleeting appearances late in the piece more mysterious and enchanting. That said, the lack of monsters in the first half of the movie does not quite sit right as it forces us to instead concentrate on the hardly remarkable main characters. Apparently much of the dialogue was improvised and it shows with nothing but awkward conversations between the pair on subjects as varied as dolphins and the weather. The romantic tension between them is also a little too routine to click with their eventual bonding blatantly obvious from the start. The film does have several solid moments though as the characters come across "infected" trees that bring to mind the forests of 'eXistenZ' and some of the monster action near the end is also quite compelling thanks to excellent special effects. The vast majority of the film though just revolves around the protagonists conversing with each other, which is only as engaging as it sounds. It is at least refreshing though to come across a dire dystopia movie where there is not a sense of doom and gloom overhanging every scene, plus the ending is certainly memorable.
