Horst in Translation ([email protected]) "Monkey Drummer" is a 2.5-minute music video from 2000, so this one is over 15 years old already as well. It was directed by Chris Cunningham and we see a robot monkey sitting at the drums and playing some music. What we hear at the same time is electronic music by Aphex Twin. I personally can only say I did not enjoy the watch or listen. Sure, it's not really my genre, but music videos around the turn of the new millennium were usually already so much better than this one here. The consequence is that nothing exciting happens and they managed the almost impossible of coming up with a short film that drags despite not even running for 150 seconds. I am sure glad this was over so quickly and I definitely do not recommend the watch. Thumbs down.
jediraider I watch this film over and over again and never get bored. It's so dense with so much going on that you find something new everytime you see it. Cunningham and James are a fantastic team. I would love to see the rest of this film since what I saw was only an installation. The film is simply one shot from what looks like some sort of monitor in a recording studio. And in this shot is a robot monkey with 6 human arms and two human legs. These dormant appendages spring to life and immediately kick in with one of the Aphex Twin's amazing drum and bass beats. I can't stress enough on how fantastic this movie is. It's just so much fun to watch. GREAT GREAT STUFF!
emessiah when chris cunningham and aphex twin get together, watch out. chris cunningham happens to be a giant fan of the likes of aphex twin and squarepusher, so the ingenuity shows when he gets a chance to direct music videos for them. their latest entry, monkey drummer, is essentially the video for aphex's drukqs album, however the pretensious snobs decided that they're too artsy for the video industry, so they just let the video open up at an art house and make the rounds on a weird short film collection dvd.as for this video itself, what can you say? i always wondered what kind of creatures would do the drums for an aphex twin track, my personal daydream being an army of angry miniature dwarves going spastic, and it turns out to be a six-armed robotic monkey.whereas come to daddy and windowlicker were satires of the music industry, this is just trademark richard james goofiness. if you can get a copy, i'd highly reccomend it.
