MOHAWK is an indie action/adventure movie masquerading as a big budget production. It's a historical story, set during the War of 1812, in which Native American characters find themselves harassed, tortured, and excuted by some very unpleasant American soldiers. Variously it recalls APOCALYPTO and THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, but overall it's rather a disappointing effort, one of those cheapies set in the woods which tells a small-scale and limited storyline. The emphasis is on telling a visually storyline with a lot of pain and bloodshed, but when you care nothing for the characters involved then this all becomes rather passe as a result. On the plus side, the costumes and occasional set are quite realistic, so it's just a pity that aimless, meandering storyline couldn't add any oomph to the tale.

So new country of USA soldiers are portrayed as cruel, stupid and bigoted. One of the Mohawks, a lead, kills 30 USA soldiers singlehandedly egged on by a brit. Soldiers are looking for Mohawk that killed them. So revolutionary war, history, is ignored and rewritten, again. I am sure there where instances where new USA acted in a way I don't condone but these instances where far and few between. I am sick of history rewrites and shaming my country. I have stars for beautiful scenery. Story blech. Acting so so . Historical accuracy? Beyond bad

The title sequence was actually good. The guy who did that used period map and inserted credits over the map. Made me think this might be a film with actual historical merit and research. It all went down from there. Jason vs Predator vs Frankenstein bad horror flick is what it became. So sad to take potential of this era and make a squib fest gore mongering ridiculous mess.A mutilated hand becoming a sharp stabbing bone defies reason or anatomy. And since there is so much talk of scalping, why no scalping? The one bloody thing this lame film that seems driven by over the top bloody effects does not do. Maybe it would be too historically accurate. Because authenticity is the furthest from their minds, and doing so would upset the downward spiral of this slasher pic set in the woods.

I wouldn't recommend spending money to watch this film. Putting aside the lackluster acting, effects, and storytelling. Mohawk is riddled with tiny fragments of potential. I dare say the lack of budget and acting isn't its biggest weakness. Plot and pacing secure Mohawks position in the lackluster section of Indie movies.
