merklekranz With Alec Baldwin, Jeff Goldblum, and Luke Wilson on board, this should have been a far better film. Luke Wilson's character comes across as a "Columbo" clone, with his bumbling questions. Alec Baldwin must have simply been on an ego trip, pairing up with Nikki Reed, while Jeff Goldblum acts like he is in a completely different picture. Parts of the movie having to do with the demise of Reed's Mother, Carrie-Anne Moss, border on sadism, and seem highly unlikely. What you wind up with is a failed black comedy, along with a failed attempt at duplicating an episode of "Columbo", with zero likable characters. Not a total disaster, but not recommended either. - MERK
kai ringler what a powerhouse of a movie. this one has a lot of racy stuff. a well of rich-guy Alec Baldwin is married to Carrie Ann Moss who constantly finds herself with a bottle and a bunch of pills, partying all the time, he is a lawyer in his firm, Nikki Reed plays Mini, a sexy young teen girl in High School who thinks she's got to have it all. Jeff Goldblum is their busybody neighbor, and Luke Wilson plays the detective hot on the trail of murder. the sequence of events goes by pretty quick so this is a movie where you really got to pay attention to every detail. the daughter feels neglected i guess and decides to turn tricks at the local escort agency,, at first she gets a client who is so remorseful he cries in her lap,, so she requests customers who actually have no regrets and want to do her,, so next client comes in ,, guess what,, it's her stepfather,, no he has no idea it's her at all,, she sees him,, makes him turn out the lights, and does a southern drawl to throw him off,, only after they get to the parking garage do the finally see each other,, she tells him,, oh you were so great.. yeah this is twisted. must see TV........
annevejb After seeing this not many times I place it in a genre category of confident young woman with developed skills in crumpling people up. Subcategory, more approachable than average. Subcategory, not a comedy, but often having a light touch. Subcategory, easily mistaken for a sex flick. Some Girl 1998 includes such crumpling skills at a level that is not so highly developed. It also includes at least one first time. It is also even more approachable than this. The story centres around the home life of a young woman during her last year of USA high school and she is played by an 18 with experience at age 13 as a star in 13, a feature that I found too daunting for me. * My past tells me that the central attributes of the main character are not so uncommon. In my user comments here I occasionally feel a need to mention trouble that I have experienced from artists in the UK. I tend to think of that as this sort of thing, but this is detailed enough to say no, that it is a specialist sub-section. The prison guards at the end. I find the guards to be a strong parallel to the gargoyle creation that artists show symptoms of believing is proper for them to carry out to those tied up and labelled as gargoyles. They are not so different to Mini, but mostly come in at a later stage. One discrepancy from my experience. The police waiter. To me he would not be following Mini. He would be following the victims, considering them to be the bad guys. Mini would even appear to have her hungers catered for by equivalents to police waiters. So, there are minis and there are minis. I have come across some who would attract a police following. * I experience this as a strong and individual feature. For me it also links with many other features that allude to parts of the processes in this story. I prefer stories that are slightly less scary.
Snoopymichele Contains spoilers.......................Nikki Reed, who was so great in "Thirteen" as the femme fatale corrupting Evan Rachel Wood, is even better as the totally twisted Mini who takes delight in doing anything to get what she wants. In this case, it's her dear old stepdad Martin (played to the hilt by the always amazing Alec Baldwin). Mommy Dearest (Carrie-Ann Moss in a terrific turn)is a drunk named Diane who only had Mini to squeeze eighteen years of child support out of a producer, who died a year after Mini's birth. The dynamic duo of Martin and Mini want Diane out of the picture, so they hatch a plan to drive her crazy so Martin can ship her off to the nut house and shack up with Mini. When their half-baked plan goes awry when Diane overdoses on pills, they decide to finish her off by making it look like she committed suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning with her Jag running in the garage. What's a little murder between lovers? After Diane's death, the cat and mouse games begin-with Martin as the mouse and an unknown blackmailer as the cat. Martin's world begins to unravel as he tries to keep up the appearance of being just Mini's father. The pace is fast and furious, and you can't wait to see what Mini has up her sleeve next. She's not a bad girl, just misunderstood-and she makes Dede from "The Opposite of Sex" look like a girl scout.Jeff Goldblum gives an awesome performance as a sleazy TV producer who had Diane at one time, and now has his sights set on bagging Mini. He's a lecher, but a likable one at that. Owen Wilson is perfect as a hard-nosed detective who is trying to prove that Diane's death was not a suicide, and Mini has him wrapped around her finger-or so she hopes. It's a dark comedy about a girl gone wild, and it's worth the ride. My vote is 9 out of 10.
