Uriah43 Let me just say that there were some good things I liked about this film and there were some bad things as well. First, I liked the scenario of the government conspiracy to keep the public in the dark as to what was happening. I also liked the logical sequence of the vampire "population explosion" resulting in more "carnivours" than food sources available and the subsequent need for the "Vichy" collaborators. The Gothic look on the part of the "Vichy" was also a nice touch. I also thought the acting on the part of "Father Joe Cahill" (Douglas Gibson) and "Father Alberto Palmeri" was adequate. What I didn't like was the character of "Gwen Waters" (Pamela Karp) when there were plenty of other more mature and better qualified actresses available in this movie. Now, I realize that the story of the film was taken from a book and it's quite possible that the book had a short, dumpy adolescent as the atheist. But there is such a thing as "creative license" when it comes to film making. Add in the fact that her acting was some of the worst I've ever seen and it became quite evident that this picture was screaming for someone else in this part. Additionally, I thought the talents of Mariana Matthews (as "Mickey Edwards") were essentially wasted as there was certainly room for more of her character. Especially considering some of the boring dialogue in certain parts of this film between Father Joe and Gwen. In short, while I liked some parts of this film I thought the extremely bad acting and miscasting of Pamela Karp almost ruined this movie. Quite frankly, it didn't have to be this way and I can only fault the director (Tony Mandile) for it. Below average.
Geshtinana I loved this film. I am a big fan of F. Paul Wilson's work. This is more the way that an adaptation of Matheson's I Am Legend should be than the two films that have been made so far (The Omega Man and I Am Legend). It may have its faults, but this film went further toward recreating the claustrophobic fear of being surrounded by those who would kill (or eat) you as other. The film seemed very true to the book, something that is all too rare these days.I would recommend this to anyone looking for a cracking, good, old-fashioned vampire movie with less gore and more plot.
Claudio Carvalho After an apparently outbreak of a mysterious virus, the world is dominated by vampires helped by the traitors Vichys. The atheist Gwen Waters (Pamela Karp) leaves the small town of St. Anthony in her bicycle trying to find the alcoholic Priest Joe Cahill (Douglas Gibson) and bring him back to her town to give hope to the human dwellers. Father Joe rebuilds the church with the support of some locals but is attacked by vampires and Vichys leaded by the evil Father Alberto Palmeri (Marvin W. Schwartz), in a battle between good and evil."Midnight Mass" has a promising beginning that explains what has happened to the world through footages of broadcasting news. Unfortunately, after the first three or four minutes, the story becomes a complete mess. However, the acting is the worst, with amateurish performances of Pamela Karp and Douglas Gibson in the lead roles, and with the ham actor Marvin W. Schwartz performing Father Alberto Palmeri. It is ridiculous the way he speaks the sentences, and I do not recall any other actor or actress with such bad speech. I ruined my Saturday night watching this crap on DVD, deceived by its great initial five minutes. My vote is three.Title (Brazil): "A Missa da Meia Noite" ("The Midnight Mass")
originalvampire I'm a fan of F. Paul Wilson. I'm a die-hard Repairman Jack fan and I certainly hope that when he decides to put Jack in an actual film, he won't allow the dick(s) that massacred this story to do it. The novel Midnight Mass was truly an ass-kicker. So many of the critical characters were left out of this film. It is not hard to write a script from a novel and maintain all or at least most of the characters. The only positive thing I can say about this film is the lead in sequence of news footage. That was the best way to describe the vampire takeover of the world. The rest of it, needs to go back to the drawing board. This was obviously a rushed project without any serious thought being given to the book. F. Paul Wilson should be ashamed and the writers of this script should have a foot put up their asses and given a twist!
