I can't be 100% sure, but I may have been part of the $5 million gross when Megaforce was released in 1982. It seems like something I would have been standing in line to see. I'm sure I didn't care for it with the horrible plot, ridiculously silly futuristic vehicles, and lame attempts at comedy. Now, however, I find it terribly entertaining. It's filled with more 80s cheesy goodness than one movie should have a right to.Megaforce stars Barry Bostwick as Commander Ace Hunter, the leader of a quick deployment special force. He is a total hoot throughout the film and looks like he's having a blast. He's in on the joke - none of this is to be taken seriously. And how could you take Hunter seriously with perfect blown dried hair and an outfit that looks like he's headed to an Olivia Newton John video shoot. His jokes and one-liners are grown-worthy, but in a good way. He's the most non-military commander put on film. Bostwisk is joined by the scene-chewing Edward Mulhare and Persis Khambatta and Michael Beck, neither of whom seem to realize this thing is a mess and play it straight. Finally, the main cast is rounded out by one of my favs, Henry Silva. He looks like he's having a lot of fun playing the crazed Duke Guerera. I admit that the first 30 minutes or so can be a bit dry. There's a lot of talking about stuff that doesn't make sense and that no one really cares about. We're here for the futuristic military vehicles (dune buggies and motorcycles with a cheap fiberglass overlay), the explosions (and there are plenty of those), and the laughable special effects (the flying motorcycle must be seen to be believed - one of the most ludicrous looking things I've ever seen). This is what makes Megaforce so much fun. I know that a movie like Megaforce isn't for everyone. I'm not ever sure I enjoy the way director Hal Needham of Smokey and the Bandit fame intended. But enjoy it I do. A 7/10 from me.

There are plenty of terribly cheesy '80s movies that are fun to watch. This is not one of them. It has just a couple of things going for it. First and foremost is the now infamous finale where star Barry Bostwick flies his motorcycle into a cargo plane. That is indeed as hilarious as it always was when you were watching the Youtube clip. Second, Bostwick's hairdo/facial hair/baby blue headband combo is glorious. This character should have been in a better movie, because he looks awesome. Third, the rockin' '80s theme song that plays over the closing credits is perfect. Actually, the music is pretty good throughout. Everything else about the film: absolutely worthless. The plot is pretty much nonexistent, and 95% of the film is just the characters sitting around talking. It's boring as Hell. Besides Bostwick, whom I actually do like in the film, there's Michael Beck from the Warriors playing a prototype for Woody Harrelson. Seriously, he looks and sounds just like him. Persis Khambatta, the female lead, isn't much of an actress, but she's pretty. For much of the film she tries to join Megaforce (by the way, they're some sci-fi special forces who hang out in the desert spying on everyone and are ready to invade other countries for no real reason at any time), but after a few sequences of showing Bostwick what a badass she is he tells her to screw off. Oh, and that he loves her, like, quite randomly. Henry Silva also co-stars as the bad guy. I have no idea what the heck was up with him. Just watch the Youtube clip, dammit.

This is my absolute favourite movie to watch to make fun of with friends. Have you ever seen an MST3K film? This movie would make great fodder. The stunts are cheesy, including possibly the worst blue screen ever, the acting is bad, the plot is laughable ... everything is so bad that it flips into being awesome. I highly recommend this movie if you are in the mood to laugh AT a movie, not WITH it. Watching it by yourself is not really recommended. I had to rate it highly, even though it's not actually a "good" movie because I do think people will enjoy watching it.
