The animation is so bad and the lines are bad, too. This movie is extremely bad, but it's not the worst movie. They were at least trying to make a good movie, and I like the message the movie teaches. Eat your vegetables, and never ever go somewhere with an alien. Milo is very annoying. He doesn't eat healthy food for most of the movie, and feeds it to his pet.

"Mars Needs Moms" looks good (the motion capture technology is a little jarring at first, but each effort from Robert Zemeckis looks better than the last) but most of the time it's surprisingly empty. This film, directed by Simon Wells is about a kid named Milo (played by motion capture, and looking very much like Seth Green, but voiced by Seth Dusky) who witnesses his mom get kidnapped by Martians, just after her made a nasty comment to her and hurt her feelings. He follows her by clandestinely jumping on one of their ships and sets off to rescue his mom. On Mars, he meets a helpful alien named Ki (Elisabeth Harnois), and a kid who also had his mom captured by aliens, but is now all grown up, named Gribble (Dan Fogler). For some reason, I'm feeling generous and I'm giving this movie a 2,5/5. Not really because I can think of a lot of things the movie did well, but mostly because I heard so much plain awful things about it that my expectations were just impossibly low. Even then I could recognize that the plot feels padded, with several scenes being included seemingly only to show off the technology as the characters fall downpipes and chutes (which would have looked great in 3D, but otherwise just feels excessive). I also felt that choices made to make the plot more lively, like having the Martian Ki talk in 1970's lingo just doesn't work. Like at all. It has a few moments with heart, as we can all relate to feeling guilty about being nasty to our mom at a certain point, but the movie doesn't go far enough with any of its characters or ideas. This needed to have more bite to make it stand out, or more laughs, or more excitement. It needed more something because there's not much here. It isn't total trash and it's pretty harmless but it's really just a forgettable family film. (2-D version on Blu-ray, September 11, 2012)

My plan was to set the film going then leave the kids to it. In actual fact, to my total surprise I really liked this and on occasions I was shushing the kids so I could hear it! My family (kids AND adults) all love the Toy Story series but aren't such fans of Happy Feet and Up... in other words, we like some animated movies but by no means all.The animation in this film is so good that in a number of scenes I found myself asking if it was animated or real. The true test (to me) is that you get carried away into the film forgetting about animation because it is so slick. Toy Story 1/2/3 did it, this did it.The story is somewhat predictable and shallow, but hey, it's a kids movie, that is exactly what it SHOULD be! My 4 year old and 9 year old could equally enjoy the movie, following the story line and knowing what outcome they wanted. There are plenty of laughs too. I found myself chuckling on multiple occasions... usually where the kids didn't :) It's typical Disney ...Fun, laughter, tears and great animation. It's a pleasing film to watch and the behind the scenes segments were a real insight and quite fun.I would certainly recommend this film for a good Sunday afternoon session on a rainy day!

In Mars, the female babies are nursed by robots while the male babies are dumped in the junkyard under the command of Supervisor. They research Earth and finds that the boy Milo is raised by his Mon with love and discipline. The Martians come to Earth and abduct Mon, to use her brain to instruct the robots about how to raise children. However, Milo slinks into the spaceship and comes to Mars. He meets Gribble, a young man that behaves like a child and together with the hippie Martian Ki and Gribble's friend Wingnut, they try to rescue Mon and bring her back to Earth. But Supervisor will give her best efforts to stop Milo and his friends. "Mars Needs Moms" is a delightful underrated animation about that crazy love thing and a tribute to the mothers and to the families. There is no explanation of how the Martians breed but the wonderful story can be easy enjoyed by those that have the concept of family, and not hatchery. My vote is eight.Title (Brazil): "Marte Precisa de Mães" ("Mars Needs Moms")
