Synopsis

When her rather explicit copy is rejected, magazine journalist Kate is asked by her editor to come up with an article on loving relationships instead, and to do so by the end of the day. This gets Kate thinking back over her own various experiences, and to wondering if she is in much of a position to write on the subject.

wes-connors "Monique" magazine writer Famke Janssen (as Kate Welles) nearly goes down when her article on how to please men is rejected. Tall and experienced in the oral act, Ms. Janssen tries not to blow her job by re-submitting a piece on relationships. Then, we follow Janssen through a linear array of men. The centerpiece of these is pseudo avant-garde artist Jon Favreau (as Adam Levy). The pair adopt kittens and argue over who produces a bad smell in bed... When she gets bored, Janssen takes up with muscle-toned Josh Hopkins (as Joey Santino), an actor who admires Robert De Niro. Also figuring prominently is fender-bender Noah Emmerich (as Eric). There are a few funny, well-written scenes by director Valerie Breiman, especially those involving Janssen and the secondary men. However, the leading players are more annoying than likable, and you may not care about their ability to reconcile differences.**** Love & Sex (1/24/00) Valerie Breiman ~ Famke Janssen, Jon Favreau, Josh Hopkins, Noah Emmerich
yagerqueen I loved this movie- every one can relate on some level and the fact that both leads are not the 'most sexiest people alive' make it even better! I can't figure out why this movie didn't make it to the big movie theaters. With such a realistic approach to the way relationships work it's a shame not to many people have heard about this move. And women who watch it will laugh because we all have done the things the lead has done in relationships and it's nice to see it brought to the main stream, now I don't feel so neurotic! My honey and I even say 'cheese sandwich' you now! And you'll have to watch the movie to find out what that means... Enjoy the movie!
covaxduplex This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Sooooooo amazing and underrated. I've watched it dozens of times and I never get sick of it. Jon Favreau is also one of my favorite actors. He's so funny! He and Famke Jensen have an amazing chemistry in this film. It seems so real and genuine, like a lot of things you can relate to and understand. One of my favorite scenes is when Kate comes home and Adam asks her to fill him a tub. I love it! :) Another one is when they are out shopping, walking down the street and they start an argument about who looks better when they age, men or women. Anyways if you've never seen I obviously highly recommend it.
Framescourer I warmed to this indie-Bridget Jones story of modern love. The message is delivered briskly and with wit and the stars don't overact. It makes no attempt to be or say anything profound - the narration of the story is a dictated article for a magazine on the periphery of superfluous. As a result the film actually gains in its interest and affect.John Favreau's bohemian foil for Famke Janssen's more mainstream female singleton is full of wit and genuine affection. It helps that his character is leftfield, re-freshing all the otherwise tired cliches of being in love in a supposed age of awareness. Janssen makes a good stab at frenetic/vulnerable but looking for love. She doesn't quite know how to really get the former however. It looks rather like she has made a cutely domesticated attempt though - I don't think any professional is going to own up to her 'make up' which is self-applied if at all; and look at her 'costume' when she first appears. There is little attention to the over-pressed detail of everything being bought 20 minites before filming started!Despite the excellent on-screen crackle of their intimacy, Janssen is an iconic presence more suited for the blockbuster (although I'd love to see Haeneke get his hands on her in Europe). As for the film, give it to your sister for Christmas and no-one loses face. 5.5/10
