Synopsis

Josie Alibrandi has a lot to deal with right now. She’s 17, got the dreaded H.S.C. in front of her, and the boy of her dreams seems completely out of reach. Then there’s that other problem. She’s a wog. Sure, it’s where Josie comes from, but it’s not where she feels she belongs. In fact, Josie doesn’t know where she belongs. With her Nonna in one ear talking about the old country and the stuck-up girls at her school telling her she’s an outsider, it’s no wonder. This year, however, everything is going to change. Josie will let loose, face her fears, uncover secrets - even discover the true identity of her father. It’s going to be a year when Josie finally finds out where she belongs.

alienmusak A mediocre movie (and book) about the sorts of unexceptional people you would walk past in a suburban supermarket and never think of again.I normally find myself sharing similar views on movies to Margaret Pomeranz and David Stratton, however, this movie is pure dulls-ville and I cannot understand how it got the attention it did.The main character of this movie is an uninteresting girl with no interests, no hobbies, no personality and a boring generic face. All of the characters in this film are like unconscious live stock; breathing, eating, and going through the basic motions of not being dead.Watching this movie was about as entertaining as staring at a potato. Reading the book required required more effort. It was more like chewing saw dust.
Kelsi I love the movie , although had forgotten how different the book is to the movie until i re read it the other day . But I think that there needed to be changes in the movie , just because of the time difference on when the book was written and set, and when the film was produced. And Melina Marchetta, the author of the book also wrote the screenplay so the characters are true reflections of how she wants them to appear. Also i love the soundtrack, especially the cover of U2's With or Without you at John Bartons Funeral , and Teenager of the Year. Its so funny coz during my final Yr 12 exams in my very last exam I remembered that song as I was finishing... it must have helped i got a good mark !! lol
Henry Fields "Looking for Alibrandi" could be labeled as a teen-comedy, but the truth is that genre is rather connected with dumb cheerleaders and quarterbacks full of testosterone, so it would be quite unfair to put "LFA" into that bag, for this is a more serious movie, the characters are not complete idiots and the story deals with matters such as the pressure that parents put on their children when it's time for them to choose a career, or the immigration issue (the main characters are Italian that live in Australia). In short: it's a kind movie that's been well filmed and with much more quality than the most of the sickly sweet Hollywood products such as "Never been kissed" and stuff.*My rate: 6/10
simone_ritchie I haven't actually seen the movie but I just finished the book because we had to read it for English and soon we have to do an assignment. I was wondering if anyone knew why Lee and Ivy were excluded from the film.. ? I think that was a stupid idea because (well not so much Lee) but Ivy was a key character in the book- especially when John died and her and Josie finally became.. well not friends.. but they accepted each other. Or does this still happen with the Ivy/Carly character? For the book i give 10 out of 10. It was great. It didn't have a perfect ending (which would have been Josie and Jacob staying together and Michael and Christina getting back together) like most movies these days which, surprisingly, made me like it even more. I mean it did have a happy ending but it also left you guessing about the whole Josie-Jacob and Christina-Michael relationships and we didn't find out a lot of things about Josie. Looking forward to watching the movie on the weekend, hope it lives up to my expectations :D
