Eric266 While this is not going to make any "Best of 2017" lists, its deserves to be seen. The horror spoof genre has been a bit overdone in the past with movies like Scary Movie and all the Friedberg/Seltzer mixed bag of spoofs. However, director Eli Craig knows his way around an homage flick (see Tucker and Dale vs Evil) so I'm not surprised he turned out an entertaining movie again. While DaTvsE was on point almost the entire time, Little Evil meanders a bit and misses out on some great chances to send up the genre. Where the Scary Movie ilk beat you over the head with the spoofs, Little Evil is a bit more suttle, being more homage than spoof. Case in point, the little boy is sitting in front of a TV with white static on it. Its an obvious reference to Poltergeist, but the little boy does not utter the words "they're here" like all of us have done at one time or another. The mere visual was enough.Adam Scott plays Gary, who has just married the perfect girl, Samantha (Evangeline Lily). Samantha has a withdrawn son named Lucas, who might or might not be the anti-Christ. The laughter comes from Gary trying to connect with the kid like any stepfather would, except the kid might be Satan. Along the way Gary is joined by members of a stepfather support group who all pretty one dimensional aside from a lesbian "stepdad" named Al. The other members of the group are recognizable comedians if you follow comedy. The plot doesn't try to be creative, but it flows along nicely and there are plenty of laughs along with some genuine moments of honesty and sincerity. Adam Scott is good at playing the normal guy with a weird streak. Evangeline Lily does the sexy girl-next-door female to perfection and she is good here, too. With a crisp running time of 94 minutes it doesn't feel padded in any way. My only criticism is I think there was some gold that didn't get mined in an attempt to go for the laughs. I think they could have make this a darker comedy about being a stepdad to the anti-christ and it would have been funny AND scary while respecting the source material AND being original in the same manner as Tucker and Dale..
Reno Rangan This is from the director of 'Tucker & Dale vs Evil'. So the expectations were high, but it was a let down. The film is watchable, but not good enough. It is actually a spoof. If you are familiar with common horror film cliches, then you will get most of it. Still, those things seem overused. I liked the idea, but I don't think they have used it in a better way. It was about a man who is married to a most beautiful woman. But the trouble is, her 5 year old boy who does not go along with him. Then he set to discover the dark secrets about him. Finally comes the time to make things right by confronting it.Netflix was the game changer in the filmmaker, especially to reach the viewers, as well as young and small filmmakers. So no films are flop, because they have all the time in the world to collect back what they've spent, unlike big screen films depended on 2-3 month window through the box office. That's why I'm always eager to watch Netflix films. Because it's available anytime, anywhere. I know some people had liked the film, I guess they did that on the entertainment basis. Like enjoy watching it and then soon forget it. That little kid was cute, but his character was exactly opposite. The rest of the cast was not bad. A decent film for watching at once!5/10
anwahs I normally love cheesy morbid horror and I don't mind Adam Scott but this was a train wreck. Cringe worthy humour and not in a good way (who wrote this crap? actually, who cares) Predictable stereotypes like the lesbian in the film, she's basically a douchey guy who uses the word "Bro" every 3 secs, and the attractive women in the film are all needy and bossy. Mark Maron was a producer, I lost some respect for him knowing that. It's really lame.
Peter John Fudpucker About the only thing, I dislike the most in any movie, is a glimpse ahead at the beginning of the movie. It works in very rare cases, but the look into future events at the beginning of this movie holds no relevance. It offers no subtle or vague idea but slaps you in the face that this will occur at some point in the film. With that said, this movie is a satire (e.g. Little Nicky) about the belief in an apocalypse brought on by the son of Satan or the Antichrist. If you are strongly religious and cannot take a joke, you won't enjoy it. Adam Scott plays Gary, a man who marries a woman without getting to know her or her son very well. Owen Atlas does a remarkable job playing Lucas and that is rare to have talent at such a young age. If you were expecting to see more horror than comedy, this is also not for you. This also pokes fun at self help groups and society's need to force other people issues onto you. You are the new dad, so this must be all your fault. If you need a mild comedy-horror-spoof this Halloween then this could be the warm up act for better movies. As for the apocalypse, it was much better than I expected.
