Also known as Last Cannibal World, Jungle Holocaust, at first glance, may appear to be Ruggero Deodato's warm-up for the more brutal Cannibal Holocaust from a few years later. Out of all the insanity spawned from the misunderstood Italian Cannibal sub-genre, this one is the only one I would have the nerve to refer to as a beautiful movie. pleasant scenery, an unfittingly inspirational score, brutality, and more brutality, and a surprisingly better storyline than most of these.Robert Harper and his traveling companion's plane suddenly breaks down in the deepest depths of New Guinea. After a long, uneasy night, The two are separated. Now, Robert is stranded alone in a harsh, unforgiving jungle nightmare with no way of knowing where to go. Robert can only hope he won't be eaten by an animal. But hey, at least there aren't any cannibal tribes in these parts...Now that Mr. Harper is locked in a cage after being captured by the local cannibals, all he can do is await his inevitable demise. Tortured, humiliated, and starving, things seemingly can't get much worse, and getting urinated on isn't helping. These sadistic primitives don't even realize Harper is a human being. After a few days, Harper, with the help of one of the ladies of the tribe, escapes, and ends up taking her with him. In an ironic twist, the primitive young lady takes a liking to Robert after he rapes her. Together, they barely avoid various dangers (everything) and witness atrocity after atrocity (jungle abortion) while she slowly shows him the way to safety. All Robert can do is hold on to enough sanity to make it through this never-ending, nerve-racking journey into nowhere. Not the first, but the first great Cannibal epic, Jungle Holocaust is much more than a Cannibal movie, Jungle Holocaust is just an all around quality movie, and my personal favorite of this particular sub-genre. It certainly ain't the goriest, although the key elements for Jungle Gore are all present, and it is a bit more dreary than the others, which should be seen as a good thing. Not quite the reputation of something like Cannibal Holocaust or Cannibal Ferox, and really, it shouldn't, but this one is certainly a must for anyone who digs this stuff. Such harsh content should have most people running for the hills, but If you don't hate graphic gore, or perhaps even like it, you just might not hate the Jungle Gore Epic. Possibly a 10/10, but as usual, the authentic animal killings bring it down a notch. 9/10

Director Ruggero Deodato's JUNGLE HOLOCAUST is part of his cannibal trilogy and a part of the rash of such to flow out of Italy in the 70's. An oil company prospector and one of his researchers lands haphazardly in the Amazon jungle near a vacated company base camp. Mossimo Foschi and Ivan Rassimov are captured by a Aborigine tribe with Stone-Age intellect and customs with a cannibalistic appetite. The early part of the movie is spent sweeping a trail through the chest-high foliage; but have no fear for there is time for maximum gore with a splash of nudity throughout the minimal plot. And oh yes, there is sex thanks to Me Me Lai. Be aware of the full-frontal male nudity. This movie was never rated by the MPAA.

Well what can I say an early start into the Genre by Ruggero Deodato, filmed on location in the Philipines, and with an excellent cast, with good visuals, music and a general theme. The music is a stark contrast to the brutal realism of the movie, Deodato learnt realism from Roselini. An excellent film, good pan outs of the location which shows the isolation of Robert Harper from the outside world. Me Me Lai is very good as the native girl, and the film overall contains some good scenes. Hollywood take a back seat, this is a masterpiece not some special FX ridden mess from Hollywood or Art-house Europe!!!! (i mean it!)The actors are all amazing, in their roles and Deodato is a very good director. He made 24 films in his career, 4 of which were excellent, the rest were rubbish, but when he puts his mind to it, he makes a damn good film!It also has a professional quality, not found in other Italian films, worthy of Sergio Leone, Pechinpah and Kubrick!!Its got some good gore scenes, only heightening the realism of this primitive world, in which half the movie takes place, in the cave of the tribe. However this proved to be just a warm up for the Extreme masterpiece that was cannibal Holocaust, made two years later!Ruggero should have gone to Hollywood out of them all, Mattei Lenzi, Fulci and Batzella, he was the only one good enough!Italain cinema deserves much more, it should be praised around the world! I hate modern Cinema, so long live Last Cannibal world! By Louis Brentnall

Two oil men, Robert(Massimo Foschi in a very demanding role)and Rolf(Ivan Rassimov)get lost in the wilderness and have to fend for their lives in the jungle populated by a Cannibal tribe whose methods hearken back to the Stone Age. They get separated after an unfortunate incident riding a river when their raft breaks apart on top of rocky rapids. Robert especially finds himself in a precarious position. He is taken by a tribe, raped of his clothes, and imprisoned for use as an alligator target(they use various animals to trap alligators for their meat). Somehow Robert must find away out of their clutches and back to the airstrip holding the airplane that brought him to the godforsaken jungle. With a female Pulan(Me Me Lai)he will need her to introduce him to foods or means of nourishment to stay alive. But, the presence of those cannibals always weighs on Robert's mind.More of a survivalist drama than a horror film shows various snakes feeding(such as a fruit-bat & Gila monster)and does show the cannibals partake in a human meal. Stnningly photographed and quite exciting, this film surprised me a bit as we see Robert slowly descend into a primitive in order to make it in this beast of a habitat.
