Stephen Abell This is a strange little film in the fact that it has so much wrong with it... but it also has so much right. So what's wrong?Batman's voice. There's just no conviction, power, or menace in it. This is one of The Bat's main features, other than his lack of super powers. It's one of the main talking points when a new Batman a character is cast. Everybody loves Kevin Conroy from The Animated Series, I really liked Anthony Ruivivar in Beware The Batman (it has the best vocal talents of the Batman series), now Will Arnet has done a brilliant job in The Lego Batman Movie. Unfortunately, Jason O'Mara doesn't do the character justice.Cyborg's origin. Though it follows the lines it's blue goo which I didn't like as it took the blame off his father, Silas Stone creating The Cyborg out of his dying son. This made Victor Stone more a casualty of Darkseid's attack rather than the love of an estranged father. The appearance of Shazam, who wasn't in the original story. The choice to use Shazam instead of Aquaman, in my eyes, was not a good one. Aquaman was instrumental in the defeat of Darkseid and his Parademons. There's also the brilliant scene when he has the whales and sharks erupt out of the ocean to devour the Parademons. The Parademons. I really do like the original design, the ones in the movie are too bulky and appear to be more machine than living entity. What's right with the film? The Green Lantern, voiced brilliantly by Justin Kirk, has the right amount of bravado and ego and his relationship with The Batman and The Flash helps to give the movie more power and a sense of humour.Christopher Gorham does a great job of voicing The Flash and adds the joy and wonder that the character exudes in the comic.Wonder Woman, though you don't know her origin story for the New 52 in the movie this could make her strong character feel a little strange, to begin with as she's like a child in a toy shop... if you knew that she's new to the real world after leaving Themiscyra would've helped there - however it's this scene which gives the character heart but as soon as the Parademons attack, her sword starts swinging and the no-nonsense female warrior we know and love come to the fore, and Michelle Monaghan who does a great job at voicing all aspects of the character.Though the thing that really makes this film work is the story and the action, for which Director Jay Oliva does a great job. These elements nullify the bad ones make the film enjoyable and watchable, though it isn't the best of the Justice League films. Still worth a watch though.
lovelyleah76-235-208960 I liked the Justice League animation series and the feature lengths as they had the same cast and crew but this one... When I saw this was on Netflix I thought fantastic I liked the previous feature lengths like Superman/Batman: Apocalypse. It probably has a great story and I was excited to watch it but the voices.. ea gads the voices of Batman and Wonder woman were really shocking, whoever did the casting... no... Sorry but Sean Astin is not a voice acting its like saying the woman off the Simpsons who does Lisa is a voice actor.I couldn't get past the first few minutes of it. Just hire the cast from the animated series, to re dub and start again with this.
dramafreak42 As a massive fan of DC animated films this one leaves me deeply divided. What it does well, it does extremely well. However what it does poorly results in some moments that are both painful and boring. It'd be easier to let the faults go if this wasn't the start of a new DCAU (DC Animated Universe) continuity. So the film opens in a world where most of the key superheroes exist, but have yet to actually interact with each other. When a massive world-threatening even occurs they must all come together for the first time to combat it. It's not the most complex story out there, but it's an appropriately huge threat to justify bringing all the characters together.Starting with the positives: the action scenes are well planned, exciting to watch and well paced. Given that most of the combat is against the somewhat generic and identical parademons, it's high praise that it doesn't leave you burned out by the end. Most of the voice cast works very well, and the characterizations of most of the characters is familiar while being just slightly different from what most fans have seen on screen so far. Shazam is a surprise highlight in this regard. However, while most of the characters work very well there are two glaring exceptions. The first is the main villain Darkseid. While the film does a good job of showing his raw power, he comes off as extremely generic. There's none of the mastermind scheming that makes him more than just a big brute, and for this reason he could just as easily have been swapped out for any number of other hulking baddies (Doomsday or Soloman Grundy come to mind.) He's really just the boss fight at the end of the film, not a proper character in his own right. It doesn't help that his dialog is also generic super-villain drivel, not that it matters because mostly he only grunts and shouts. During the fights, the film also shares the "Man of Steel's" disregard for collateral damage. While it's fair that plenty of buildings were going to be obliterated in this conflict, none of the heroes seem to have any concern about this happening. This means that fans of Superman who were irritated by his apparent apathy at the lives put in danger by his fighting in a city will have the same criticism here applied to the entire Justice League. The much bigger problem than Darkseid however is Wonder Woman. She is very poorly written, given naïve and grating dialog throughout, frequently treated as a punchline. It's probably meant to be funny but it just never plays as anything other than irritating. The overly enthusiastic performance of Michelle Monaghan makes it even worse. She exudes none of the stoic strength that made so many of the previous animated takes on the character so powerful. And the almost immediate attraction to Superman only serves to cheapen her further. I'll admit to being fundamentally against the power-couple of Superman and Wonder Woman, as I feel it inherently undermines her. He's literally the only man on the planet that she could be paired with that she isn't the power in the relationship. There's still plenty that works here, with stellar action and most of the characters having good chemistry (I could watch Green Lantern and Batman bicker all day long.) However the things that aren't working aren't just minor nitpicks, they're fundamental flaws. And some of them are ones we're going to be stuck with for future DCAU releases, which for the first time ever removes my excitement at future adventures of Wonder Woman.
stuartjross Have to admit I was keen on seeing this as this marks the first real foray into NuDC's 52 universe. And its a massive disappointment. The storyline itself is good, but then it should be. It borrows heavily from some of the better writers in Comicdom and their opening Justice League arc.Sadly though, the art is basic to say the least and lazy to be more negative. The voices are a half decent fit with some very mediocre voice acting but the characterisation...where do we start?? I'm unsure of whether to lay the blame at the film or whether the true fault lies in DC's reimagining of the heroes for this new 52-verse.Batman is his usual aloof self, Superman comes off as a cold arrogant a$$, Captain Marvel is more of a dunderhead than usual, Hal is a schoolboy in a mans body and wonder woman comes off as a real Bee-you-know-what.Only Barry and Vic get to resemble something of themselves. One to miss I'm afraid.
