barbourjohn-633-608932 A movie that helps you major on the majors which are love and community. Joshua (Jesus in Hebrew - really Yeshua)is just that; a Christ figure ( or maybe even Christ himself) who comes to a small town and brings healing, love, and community. He helps the black Baptists build a church; carves a Peter statue for the Catholics and helps the Pharisaical and hypocritical priest find freedom from his fears and another priest his true calling. He also, helps a "faith healer" learn what real healing is and that he does not need to resort to manipulative tactics. It's a feel good movie and one that is good to watch now and again. It's not that the law doesn't matter ( the hypocritical priest's view) or that it's wrong to have a revival meeting ( the faith healer); even the bureaucratic Roman catholic church has a place; it's just that these are all peripherals and not the center. Thee center is Christ and Loving God and your neighbor as yourself and even the resurrection hope.
Paul1149 It took me seven years to appreciate this film. Not a constant seven years, but that was the interval between when I first saw it and mostly disliked it, until now, when I love it. The reason is that the book the movie is drawn from is so powerful, I couldn't see why the movie diverted from it so greatly. However for some reason I felt a leading to watch the film again last week, and now I was able to appreciate it on its own merits. And they are many.I think the reason this movie is so powerful is that Joshua exhibits a "natural spirituality". There is nothing religious or sanctimonious about him. With him, it's all about relationships based on serving each other. In other words, it's about love.Of course, the supernatural power is there too, and it's what gives Joshua the man his special credibility. But it works alongside his loving character. There were several moments in this film that I found moving. The odd thing is that they were not flashy, raising-the-dead moments. They were little things that spoke of the love and power of God, of Christ having come to gently serve us and show us the way.I found the scene with what happens to the broken glass vase moving, and I thought that Stacy Edwards did a fantastic job in her role as Maggie. I particularly liked the scene with the pope. Giannini did an awesome job of showing a quiet humble spirituality. Also Kurt Fuller was totally believable in his role. And of course, Tony Goodwyn was superb. Excellent job also, Colleen and Eddie, as Joan and Theo! Now that I'm over the book-movie comparison, I really appreciate this film. Also, MW Smith's score is really excellent. Fantastic job all around. This film is great for believers and those not quite there yet. Turn your friends and family onto it. They will be glad you did.
Armand one of that movies reducible to its message. because it is its unique virtue. the performance, cast, script are instruments for better understanding.it is a religious film but in a special manner. because not the saint element is central but relationship. it is not a moral lesson. it is not a lesson. only pledge for different mode to discover and build life. it is beautiful and touching because the shining of little basic things/fact/words/parables are beautiful and touching. it is like a spring morning or a poem in an old box. nothing else. a film about a community. and way of a stranger. self-definitions. and warm state of soul. that is all. enjoy it !
mOVIemAN56 I managed to get hold of a copy of Joshua from a friend a few weeks back. I had watched this in a theology class when I was in college and I remembered enjoying it and decided to get hold of a copy. The movie gives its viewer a fresh look at religion.Joshua is childish, it's corny, it's lame, but it works. The story, follows the life of a mysterious man named Joshua and how he affects people of a small community. Joshua is portrayed exactly how he should be by the well talented Tony Goldwyn. Goldwyn makes Joshua to be easily likable, mysterious, and completely absent of corruption from the world. In supporting roles with all excellent performances are one of my favorite actors Kurt Fuller who plays the bumbling but good hearted Fr. Pat. Fuller was perfect for the role the way he is able to show fear towards Fr. Tardone yet compassion for Joshua. Also in support is the legendary F. Murray Abraham who comes closest to being a villain. There is no real bad guy in this film so sorry folks. The film has no flashy special effects, no big name actor taking up the screen, and no action filled sequences. There is no twist to the movie. It is straight forward with its message. The film shows people who have trouble understanding the concepts of Christianity what Jesus would be like today if He was here. The film is a tad corny but a person is easily able to ignore it with the magical acting of Tony Goldwyn and Kurt Fuller. Even if a person is a non-believer or a believer of another religion, a person can easily enjoy this film and learn a few things about life while doing so. My only complaint is that the last half hour is a little slow compared to the first hour.Joshua. 4 out of 5
