me-justaman I don't know how and why that project was allowed to happen, but wow, the idiocy of these people is spectacular... I was hoping for a "so bad its good" type of treat, but the pretension and total shallowness of the people who did that just made it annoying and no guilty pleasure. This movie is in fact a remake (or a rip-off?) of a great french- Italian movie from the late 70's called "LA GRANDE BOUFFE" by cult film maker Marco Ferreri and starring legendary actors Marcello Mastroianni, Philippe Noiret, Michel Piccoli and Ugo Tognazzi, and in the role of the woman the voluptuous Andrea Ferreol.the concept here is the same: 4 men get together in a house to commit suicide, witnessed in this path by a woman. Ferreri's movie was an allegory about modern consumerism and the spiritual suicide of a society. Now, this bunch of morons (sorry I really cant find other names to describe that) tried to do the same with their very limited imagination and their substandard story-telling skills: they just replaced the gourmet food used in the original with some recreational drugs, and tried to explain in your face why where they committing suicide, why, whyyyy?!?! look!! this is the reason why!! look! whhyyyy!??! ... yep, as bad as it gets!the original movie had the vision of an adult (the author) and a message that held the whole concept together. But here, the people behind this bad film appear like some middle class suburban children with no education: watch these actors try to go indie art-house and ending making idiots out of themselves, or this clueless director trying to play "author" but you cant help but imagining how lost he may have been in philosophy class (he is no Cassavetes neither so his directing style is laughable and he makes the actors sound bad)... not talking about the script: so much self-indulgence it is un- watchable. This kind of movie is most probably directed toward teenagers awakening to the first "life sucks" kind of darker feelings, and who have no education... but still, I would suggest skip this turd and get the original Ferreri movie instead! much more entertaining!I know, I know! Jeremy Piven from Entouage plays in this turd... but its not enough to save the film... oh, and they have cast for the part of the woman one of Ari Gold's female enemy-character from entourage ! she is no Andrea Ferreol neither!
NateWatchesCoolMovies I Melt With You is an easy film to dismiss as crass, unnecessary nihilism. It's easy to look at the four wealthy, healthy main characters and scoff at the idea that they are in any kind of turmoil or crisis, and patronize them for going to the staggering lengths of excess portrayed in this film. Take a second. Empathize. Everyone, rich or poor, healthy or terminal, is going through their own private hell in some way, shape or form. These four guys, meeting together for a week long getaway to gorgeous Big Sur, are manically stoked to be together and appear outwardly happy in their revelry. But as the days pass, we see this is just not the case. Thomas Jane plays the failed writer turned schoolteacher who is at the end of his rope. Jane displays here that he's got more going on than just the strong hero type, showing a sadsack depression and wicked energy in his scenes. Jeremy Piven brings his usual spitfire, hopped up parade of mannerisms, and they click wonderfully with the writing and direction as a hedge fund prize boy who has embezzled money and is on the guilt train straight to insanity. Rob Lowe surprised the crap out of me, as I was never a huge fan. But here he shows stinging vulnerability and an utter, soul sucking sadness as the pill popping MD who's in dire straights for peddling wares outside the boundaries of prescription, as well as living with a broken family and kids he can't see through no fault but his own. Christian McKay, who I've never heard of before this, just owns his role as the fourth, a sensitive, guilt ridden and deeply troubled man who was responsible for the death of his boyfriend many years ago, and is clearly not okay about it even years later. The four of them descend into a chaotic cacophony of extreme drug and alcohol abuse, everything from coke to downers, tranqs, and every other substance you can think of is consumed in this film. The scenes of excessive consumption are hard to watch, but also have a go for broke, kamikaze approach to them, set to one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Seriously, I could list the 100+ amazing songs that show up throughout, and I'd still be missing some. The film progresses to some really dark, unsettling places, involving a pact the four of them made 25 years before, and the ramifications of where their self disappointed lives have ended up. It's easy to watch this and hate it, to be bombarded with its sensory overload of various gimmicks, unconventional styles and brutal onslaught of despair and self loathing. It's much harder to try and put yourself in these guy's shoes and imagine what it might be like for them. Each one, personally as an individual, to truly not be right in your soul, and what that might look like bursting out into one's life. Kudos to Mark Pellington for undertaking such a brave, unique venture. Indeed in the last five years it's truly like no other film I've seen, with an energy and operatic stream of consciousness all its own. Oh and the cinematography. It's a breathtaking one to look at, some of the images like pure silver and gold distilled into cinema. Between the beaches, wide amber sunsets the same colour as the whiskey in their glasses, to the sand dunes that stretch into the beyond, endless and desolate like their collective psyches, it's a wicked looking movie. I'm almost reminded of Stephen King in a way, like if the kids from Stand By Me or Dreamcatcher grew up to be in some kind of nightmare sequel. There's great supporting work too, from porn star Sasha Grey as an enigmatic local prostitute, Carla Gugino as an inquisitive local cop, and the excellent Tom Bower as a heartbroken fishing vessel captain. This one isn't for everyone. But anyone open to pure excess, emotional destruction, beautiful scenery and the best soundtrack in a while needs to watch this.
kertime I can relate to the plot of this movie. I get together with chums of the past and we do some partying- nothing like that found in 'Melt'!Underneath all reunions are the currents of what we were versus what we are now... not always easy to handle. And there are disappointments as you get to know your friends better as you dwell on your common past and where you all are today. This movie was traumatic, a dark episode painted in a beautiful setting. It left me shook, and thankful for my friends of yesterday as we face our mirrors, and the future. In the sense that this movie strongly evoked my feelings (I had to hit the pause button often)- and forced me to consider my life story: it was a bitter pill, hard to watch but had some good effects.
Jane Syzygy I was expecting a lot more because of the ''omg this film was awesome'' reviews displayed on here. The movie included a few nice songs. The cinematography is very good, that made it more easy to watch but still, like I always say: stay away from the ''kids know how to party'' teen flicks and it's all good...Why? because that stuff gets old after 10 minutes, and even more when that's the only thing it has to offer to the audience.Points to be mentioned 1:Four old men reunited go on a drug trip, recycled situations/images of other movies. 2:Sasha Grey trying to act(topless). 3:Some funny lines. 4:Great cinematography (I voted 3 stars just for this) ...snd there, you got a movie!Maybe some teenagers will enjoy it because of the drug use,the somehow pretentious I'm a rebel mood and the couple of cute baby gurls, but still you're not losing anything good.
