Synopsis

Five strangers face the unthinkable when they wake up and find themselves trapped. With no idea how they got there they frantically try to figure out how to escape. The disoriented group quickly realise the truth about their situation when they discover another room containing enough water to survive for 30 days… and a razor sharp surgical knife. The intention becomes quite clear. Whoever put them in this place wants to see just how long it will take before the hunger makes them commit unspeakable acts and cross a very deadly line.

stitchesaresore A man, who as child ate his mum after an accident, takes five people captive and leaves them with only water and a knife to research how long it will take for them to give in to cannibalism. The premise is interesting, the acting is pretty good for a low budget film, and it focuses more on human behaviour than the gore fests that this has often been compared to. There are some poor directorial choices (like opening the film in complete darkness with only the victim's voices to assure you that your screen isn't messed up) and after weeks of being trapped underground the captives still look pretty fresh despite having no hair brushes, razors, or food. After such a time period of starvation, no one gets nearly as fatigued as they should have. While this film could have been much better, it also could have been much worse. It's right in the middle for me, a solid 5 out of 10 stars. I wouldn't suggest Hunger for the casual viewer, but if you don't mind watching lower budget films, it's definitely worth a try.
Worker Ant The movie begins somewhat promising: A kid's in a crashed car with his dead mother, queue dramatic background music. Nearly everything else beyond this scene falls short, and fast. We'll forget the set design being about as low budget as it gets, this didn't effect my score in any way. We're immediately thrown into what's seemingly a cave with our characters, their eyes completely unadjusted to the dark. Small confrontations take place among all of our actors struggling to find out how to make it look like they're blind to everything, but the task proves too daunting and the director throws a light into the plot. Quickly calibrating the pupils in their eyes without so much as a, "Goddammit that's a bright-ass light!" our characters study one-another and almost seem frightened among faces as unfamiliar to us as they are to them.A knife is picked up by our doctor, Jordan (Lori Heuring), and she immediately knows what the psycho's plan is upon reading the attached note that honestly might as well have just said, "Eat each other, use this. :D" Not wanting to give in to the psycho or hunger, the characters stave off death for weeks by consuming... only water. This is the part that severely let me down. Even obese people die from malnutrition after just a few weeks, yet here these guys are with what seems to be all the strength and health in the world after over three weeks. It gets better. An odd few clips of the psycho messing with the camera how a bored gamer would when their toy's become dull later, we finally get our first killing. It's a deserved one as Grant (Linden Ashby) gets his head and body bashed in. Second best part of the movie for me out of the staggering amount of two scenes I enjoyed. Long story short: The others go crazy since survival is obviously deranged, Jordan (the character right behind Grant that deserved a good cave-man bashing) lures the psycho into the hole and kills him, and the entire thing ends after 36 days WITHOUT FOOD where she's still able to climb a rope ladder.Did I mention her killer line? "I won't give in to your game." She killed Luke (Joe Egender) just seconds beforehand, thus giving in to the game. Killing the psycho only furthered his agenda.
Tss5078 Fangoria Frightfest film number three is Hunger, which many people have compared to Saw. Yeah, this movie is Saw, if Saw had the people locked in an empty room, had no budget, and Jigsaw was a mute cannibal. Hunger is most defiantly a ten on the gross out scale, but besides that it has absolutely nothing going for it. Seldom have I seen a horror film that is as pointless or moves as slowly as Hunger did. The film is only one hundred minutes, but it felt as though I was watching it for days! The star of the film is veteran horror actress, Lori Huering, whose character is pretty well written, but is also unfortunately as dull as the rest of the cast. Most reviews for Hunger have been favorable and I can't understand that. Aside from the victims arguing with each other, there is hardly any dialogue. There is also zero character development, which is crucial in a film like this. If the audience doesn't give a damn about the victims or what happens to them, then what's the point? Hunger tries to shock you with it's level of gore, but more concerning is the lack of substance and the laziness of the film makers. Yes, the ripped off most of their ideas from Saw. Saw had a tremendous villain and a fascinating story that spawned six squeals, while this film is so lazy that after a month of isolation, the men's beards didn't even grow! Somehow, Hunger got to be part of a major horror festival, but it most defiantly represents the festivals lowest point.
Ben Larson What will you do to survive? A group of people, trapped in a basement without food, are facing that very question. It took 24 days before members of the group did the unthinkable to another member. All but Jordan (Lori Heuring) participated. How long will she hold out? Surprisingly, after her hunger for food was satisfied, Anna (Lea Kohl in her debut) proceeded to satisfy another hunger with Grant (Linden Ashby).A somewhat predictable ending, but the journey was very interesting. A trip worth taking.
