A 1991 film, "Homicide" opened the careers of two very important stars: William H. Macy, and Ving Rhames. A very under-rated and seldom-seen Joe Mantegna stars as Detective Bobby Gold, who works for an unstated northeastern police department that looks every bit like Baltimore PD. The department is after the killer of two cops. The FBI attempts to arrest the suspected killer (in a wonderfully understated, quiet but efficient initial scene) but manages to let him vanish. The heat is on the mayor's office and politics rage. Det. Gold is called a "kike" by one of the mayor's black handlers. In the process of tracking down the cops' killer, Gold manages to get himself involved in the homicide of an older Jewish woman killed in her store. Was she the target of everyday thugs, or the mark of someone continuing the Jewish pogrom? Mamet shows the policemans mindset in many ways, first by showing racial slurs hurled at him by a angry black city worker at the start of the film, but then later on in the film he meets a hasidic jew who when he tell he can't read Hebrew says "then what good are you". after the policeman is heard making anti-semitic remarks himself by a family member of the case he is working on he goes all out to find the killer, when in actuality they don't care about the homicide at all, but a list that was in the care of the deceased, a list that could expose some of their illegal doings in Israel.Overall rating: 8 out of 10.

*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS*SPOILERS"Homicide " is a movie from David Mamet that feels like a movie , instead of stage play like his other movies. It's surprising well directed . It has a dark , gritty feel . The dialogue are great , after all it's a trademark of Mamet. The actors are allowed to show emotions and they gave energetic performances.Joe Mantegna is great in the main role , even better than he was in "House of games". Of course he plays now a different character and is the main star. His character is tough and independent , yet his also a good man . Mantegna shows the transformation of his character in a very believable way . I was also surprised and delighted to see William Macy as a tough guy for once instead of his usual "shy guy" role. Ving Rhames gives a good episode. Anyway the acting is rally good here and even Rebecca Pidgeon (Mamet's second wife) is watchable."Homicide" is a good drama about identity , about discovering one and losing another . It's a sad , bitter and very real life movie. The final exchange of looks between Mantegna and the prisoner reminds us how evil very often comes from the need to do good. The main problem is the ending . It works as a drama , but from logical point of view it's one big plot hole. 1) Was there a Secret Jewish organization or not ? I have seen this movie two times and it's still a confusing thing . Personally I think they were arms dealers. 2) It really doesn't matter who they were . The point is that the whole operation was a trick to convince Mantegna to give them the list . The problem is that a) they couldn't be sure that Mantegna will find it (he did find it very accidentally) , b) he couldn't give the list to them , because it was locked in police headquarters. I thought (the first time I've seen the movie) that "Homicide" will end with Mantegna stealing the list from the headquarters and getting fired. They were able to blackmail Mantegna with photos , but they couldn't be really sure that Mantegna will care so much to personally destroy the shop. 3) In the end the Jews failed because Mantegna is fired from police and he won't be able to steal the list , even if he would want to. So the lists lies in the police headquarters and they are left with nothing despite so much work
I give it 7/10.

I watched this film dumbfounded. Its convoluted plot and confused ending leaves me speechless and annoyed that I watched this drivel. It fails to be clever on all levels and is absolutely unbelievable. ps note to all directors - it's no use hiding behind a police car in a shoot out. Oh i now need to add some more notes because unaccountably my earlier submission above was not adequate, Well the character development of such a boring star is impossible. The detectives are so stereotyped as to beggar belief. The use of cut away shots to explain problems such as dropping/losing a gun are juvenile. Enough said. And just for luck I did not enjoy it.

This movie is a class in movie-making 101, even on the cheap. Mamet shows what a great film you can write and produce with the most basic of sets. Half a dozen great stage and movie actors and excellent and basic staging.Mamet's writing style is poetry. At times, it is like watching something between an opera, a ballet and a Baptist church service. The call and response style to Mamet's writing is simple, pure and elegant. Mamet's cast of regular actors, also notably seen in "House Of Games" is superb. The original, sparse music adds a nearly documentary feel to the film. You can still find this in the "used" internet movie web sites on VHS for a buck and a half. THis is a great film and a great teaching film for aspiring film writers and directors.
