The premise for the movie had potential, but it was ruined by overkill. There's not too much originality in exploring the antics of an intrusive, micro-managing mother and her long-suffering off-spring, but to be effectively done, some subtlety and realistic reactions need to be present. In this film, the mother goes beyond meddling and goes well into the realm of obnoxious smothering and the character's efforts to appear to be a free spirit dedicated to protecting her son engenders no sympathy for supposedly well-meaning intentions.Even more difficult to believe is that her son bears all of this with amazing equanimity rather than resorting to suicide and/or matricide and that the other students at his school seem to barely notice the mother's constant manipulative presence. There are a few worthwhile scenes where the son attempts to resolve his confused take on his own sexual orientation with his long absent father ... despite the fact that his mother has outed him as gay to everyone because it suits her plans to finance his college education, but for the most part the film is more excruciatingly annoying & cringe-worthy than humorous or moving.

I've always had a thing for coming of age teenage films and this one is now up there with my favorites! It's so cute and tender and touching and made me want to cry at times and laugh at others. It's so weird but Nia Vardalos reminds me so much of my own mum but in a good way - luckily my mum never put posters of me all around my high school! Jason Dolley sometimes annoyed me but was still nice to watch. Skyler Samuels was such a great choice for the queen bee of High School. She has such a beautiful way about her. I wish she was my friend. Please watch this film. It's so touching.

I'm a mother and this movie touched me in a way I didn't think possible. It's so hard raising a child and even harder to see them leave home for the first time. Nia Vardalos does such a beautiful job as the mother. She's smart and funny and full of life and I just wanted to give her a big hug her at the end of the movie. The relationships between the whole family are so honest - the mother and son were my favorite. Lloyd's difficulties in finding his sexuality were really difficult to watch at times but I think it was done in a really clever way. All the mothers at the PTA meeting were hysterical - that Barbara Boxer was so crazy and witty she had me in stitches. All mothers should watch this!!!

The people giving this movie 1 star have no idea how hard it is to make a movie. They have no idea how much work, time and heart goes into making a movie, ESPECIALLY an independent film. 1 star means that the movie failed completely on every level and that is just indisputably wrong. This movie looks and sounds as good as a studio romcom. The performances are all solid and the story holds up.If we don't support independent movies we're only going to get boring, vanilla stories and comic book movies.I would challenge everyone who rated this movie 1 star to try to do better and then get their heads out of their .
