I first read the novel when i was in my early teens, and I've loved everything about the whole series ever since. The 1987 film always disappointed me, in casting and execution. I was pleased to see that the cast was much more how I imagined the characters as I read. However, the movie was awfully executed. The characters at times felt so scripted (when Chris confronted Cathy after kissing Bart, I cringed), and the whole thing felt rushed. At the point in the movie where I thought it had been a few weeks in the attic, Cathy hit us with two years. Small details were left out too. The swan bed was nothing as described, the doll house had 4 rooms even though it was supposed to be based on the grandmothers childhood mansion, the tar in Cathy's hair was supposed to come out, but leaving the hair weak, which I always thought was symbolic. The starvation period always felt like a huge crux of the book to me, but it was all but completely left out. Cathy's tantrums were overlooked, and she did ballet once. Was Chris even a doctor-to-be in the movie? I feel like an accurate and good quality film that stuck to the books would have to be two or three movies long. The book was divided into two parts, the movie should do the same, rather than skipping half of the plot and leaving major themes unexplored.

My problem is not with the incest, as we know that's wrong! And the guy and girl weren't actually brother and sister. Plus, a storyteller has the right to tell a story of incest--if they want! The problem with this movie is the age of the youngest of the two and the difference between a 12-14 year old and an 18 year old, esp. when the oldest is a man! Wasn't Shipka(Cathy) too young?! You have an adult in almost mature love scenes with an ACTUALLY younger than 15 yr old girl! Don't they usually cast young looking 18 year olds for these roles?! You mean they couldn't find someone like that for this role! You open a statutory rape issue, unnecessary hormone infusing(with a young girl), possible addiction, possible suicide, etc. that goes along with introducing sex into a child. It may be going on, but it shouldn't be and should be tastefully done when the story is told in a public forum. You may even create a hormonal relationship not built on love between the two. Where were the parents of this girl(she was 12-14, depending on what info you believe)? It seems like severe neglect charges should be brought up against them and it seems like all profiting parties(Lifetime) should be severely criminally liable(crime happening for hire) for what happens in the movie! Great movie otherwise, but sometimes there are more important things than the quality of a movie! A pervert or pedophile manifesto(Lifetime edition)!

I was very impressed with this film. I came across this film by accident as I was just checking the order of the next book after starting to re read the series again and thanks to google suggestions it came up so I had to google it further. Being a big fan of the books for many years and having read them several times, I was slightly concerned the film would not live up to the books and without fail there was parts that I though should have been added or that could have been portrayed better but none the less I was still impressed with the film. A few years ago I watched the other adaptation of the book and was very disappointed as it was shocking and did not do the book any justice. But in this version I felt the actors played the parts well and I felt just as addicted to this film as I do the books and would happily watch it again.

If you watch the original, and compare both films, you will notice the 2nd film seems to have a cheaper budget, its rushed, acting is poor, and the film ambiance is not there.. its seems as though its rushed. the original has you feeling its real, a better story and more detail.. the new one is badly written, a lot of original story is missing, and the sets look like set, rather than the feeling you get from the original...the closeness to detail is missing which makes a story, the connection between bro and sister does not feel right, and if they are going to make a set, make it so its close to the original..when you watch both, i feel you will agree with me that the first film is much better.
