Reviews

Mrssmiff I've read all the reviews of First Born on here and some other reviewers share my opinion that this is a good film, which builds intensity leaving you wanting to know what happens in the end. However, the more I try and analyse the film (which isn't always a good thing)the more confused I become. It's well made, acted and scripted. Elisabeth Shue plays the role of the anxiety filled new mother well, as an actress of her calibre should. Some reviewers perception of the film is that Shue is a new mother struggling with PPD whilst others seem to see it as a haunting/possession type scenario. For me, I perceived this film to be portraying the struggles of a new mother - the anxieties progressing to psychosis. Having suffered from post natal depression myself after a c-section, I instantly felt a connection to Shue's character, however I never descended into psychosis, thankfully. But throw in the whole "curse" angle to the mix, along with the character of Jenny who is referred to as having previously lived in the house, then that's when things got a bit confusing for me. When the nanny attached the bundle under the baby's crib, I thought that was to protect the baby. But then when Laura comes back from the black-tie dinner and asks why she didn't answer the phone, the nanny said she hadn't heard it ringing - although the phone could clearly be heard ringing in the background, whilst the nanny was attaching the bundle under the crib. That said, I still enjoyed the film and couldn't wait to see how it ended. Supernatural thriller or psychological thriller? You decide.
board-5 Poorly written script, and directors art visions about women,I don't want to recommend this, slow, poor, disturbing, but is not as different as they says.Seen it before parts put together without any skills.Unforunatelly Elizabeth Shue plays with one boring face in the whole movie.Laughable dialogs makes the situation worst, but not in a good way, cause this movie, and it's director has not real sense of humor.Feels like the movie is almost 150 minutes long, while not,but feels like that long.Officially this movie has not(V)or(TV)-sign,or rating by IMDb.At this moment, but I will not wonder if years after this will get it,cause it worth that.1,2/10-not worth watching.
sol1218 ***MAJOR SPOILER ALERT*** Really a case of severe post natal depression more then a "Rosemary's Baby"-like imitation the made for TV movie "First Born" is about a young woman Laura Davis, Elisabeth Shue, who goes off the deep end into La-La land when her pet dog Harper is accidentally poisoned after eating rat poison that she planted in her house.Being already pregnant Laura's deep guilt over Harper's death leads to her feeling that she won't be a good and caring mother to her soon to be born child. This leads Laura to conjure up all kinds of crazy scenarios about her being cursed, or hexed by evil spirits, in this case witch's, that not only drives her batty but also everyone else she comes in contact with including her husband Steve, Steve Mackintos. After her baby is born Laura starts to feel that it's not really her's in an obvious excuse to shirk any responsibility in properly taking care of it. This is for Laura to have and excuse in anything that happens to her child, a girl, being the results of supernatural forces not her own inability, due to her post natal depression, in being good a mother. The film goes on and on with a number of crazy incidents, conjured up by Laura, where the baby's life is always in danger when it fact it's not. The only one who's a threat to Laura's baby's health, or even life, is Laura herself. The worst thing by far that Laura does is accuse the kind caring nanny Mrs. Kasperian, Kathleen Chalfant, of trying to either kidnap or murder her new born child. This accusation by Laura is so ridicules that even the local police refuse to even entertain, much less act on, it. Coming up with stories about rats and sinister and bloated baby dolls doesn't help Laura either in making anyone believe her. All this causes Laura's mother, Blain Brown, to travel to New York from the other side of the country, California, to come over and look after her grandchild since Laura seems totally incapable of doing it. When the movie ends you get to see just how incapable of being a mother Laura really is!
dea999 OK well, I've just seen the movie. First I expected a lot from it, it had a promising beginning, dark and creepy paranoia stuff, my favs :) But at one point, I've lost it... And since I'm totally annoyed by this ignorance of mine, can PLEASE someone explain couple of things for me? I get it that the movie was based od PPD, but how exactly does that witchcraft woman fit in? And the ending, what the hell was that?!! Last I concluded (at least I thought I was on the right track) was that she bought that witchcraft book, 'fond out' that the lady was doing some kind of black magic over her and she got lost of that baby doll.I sincerely thought that the doll was the last piece of that voodoo crap and we'll have a happy ending. But what the hell happened when she buried that doll? And what happened to her, precisely- with her memory, brain or whatever...? I'm furious and I don't get it! So please, if anyone has a good and (more or less) logical version of the possible ending, it would help a lot :) Than U!!
