I watched "Fire and Ice" because of its awesome looking cover that made me think about some epic fantasy sword fights and magic in battle between powers of good and evil. I got that, kind of, because it was so generic and predictable I dosed off several times. Most of the time the generic princess from the fire kingdom was just running away from the minions from the fire kingdom. That should have kept me at the edge of my seat, but when the character is both so bland and has no backstory I had not got any feelings for her being in danger. The blandness deprives almost every character of a possibly engaging persona even his/her role was still generic. The voice work was generally bad, but that again comes down to the predictability of the entire movie. I liked the ice king's voice a little when he made his slimy personality come a little more to life, but that's pretty much it. The animation was a mixed bag. I really liked the backgrounds with their classic feel of hand-drawn paintings, but the character animation was sketchy and some times felt unnatural in their movements. The music was nice, with a dramatic pounding feel to it accompagnied by trumpets and other horns to make it sound epic. With all that said, maybe hardcore fantasy fans will like it, but I would skip it in favour of pretty much anything else.

This one is great... the story and gorgeous animation is mature (not dirty but not kiddiefied). Good animation for those that appreciate comics and other animated films.A story of a tribe that lost their homes and lives to a glacier via an evil Ice Lord Nekron. Larn is this only survivor King Jarol has the place of Fire and his daughter, Teegra, is abducted by the ape-like men. Larn must save Teegra and put an end to Nekron. This is one of Ralph Bakshi's finest films... I remember seeing this as a kid and it's nice to watch again all these years later.. has upheld the test of time well.Ralph Bakshi also created The Lord of the Rings (1978) - another film well worth watching!!9/10

Queen Juliana rules the ice. She sends glaciers south and her son Nekron to attack with his horde. Larn's village is destroyed by the advance. He survives and escapes south. In Firekeep, Nekron's minions kidnap princess Teegra. Teegra manages to escape and joins Larn. They get separated by a water monster. Teegra is recaptured. Larn is joined by Darkwolf on a journey to battle Nekron. This is standard Conan-like story written by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway. Director Ralph Bakshi and illustrator Frank Frazetta join to create this world. Bakshi uses his rotoscoping process. It is an animated sword and sorcery movie. It is Conan without the charisma of Arnold. It works fine especially for fans of this genre.

"Fire and Ice" was a good animated flick, which I consider to be (along with "American Pop" and "Spicy City") one of the best works directed by Ralph Bakshi. Personally, I enjoyed this much more than his version of "The Lord of The Rings".Even when the story from "Fire and Ice" had many of the most clichés from the genre, it still was a highly entertaining animated adventure, which also had an impressive animation style (specially considering the time when this movie was made) with many beautiful sceneries and great character designs.I would recommend this movie to anyone who likes sword and sorcery films.7.5/10
