The positives, Madonna at her best and the story line was fine. The two well known songs were worth listening too then everything goes down hill from there. We thought the direction and production was poor at best and the rest of the score in this musical was dreadful almost painful, really disappointed. Will we be watching it again?, not a chance, the DVD is destined for the bin.

Opening with her premature death, this musical about Argentinean first lady Eva Péron flashes back in time to show her rise to fame before becoming embroiled in politics when her husband assumed control of the country. The standout aspects here are the music and memorable songs, however, they are a mixed blessing. There is a hardly any spoken dialogue with the characters singing over 90% of the time, which renders it hard to get under anyone's skin. By the end, one gets the sense that Eva was loved by many and hated by some, but the reasons why are never clear with the music/songs always at the forefront; it is not clear either how Eva ticked as an individual and how her mind worked, and Madonna is hardly spectacular, vocals aside. Antonio Bandares gets the film's best moments as a narrator of sorts, slyly winking at the camera and exuding lots of charisma, but he is not on screen anywhere near often enough to carry the project. Those with some knowledge of the actual Eva Péron and Argentina's political history may well get more out of the film. For those uneducated in such areas though, this is not a great place to start. Accurate sets and costumes ensure that the film looks good and with all that amazing music it sounds good too, but if as important as the film makes out her life to be, a non- musical narrative may have done better justice to the legacy of Eva Péron.

Short review:As always, I don't like to summarize a movie so I won't do it, it is better viewers discover by themselves. Unfortunately I didn't like that movie that much, for one reason, because I hate musical movies. The same thing happened when I watched a movie from Marry Poppins, I just can not stand actors singing all the time! Therefore, I could not finish the movie, some bits of it were fine, for example, the beginning of the movie when we are taught about the death of Evita. Now, the movie has some historical connotation, but just for the sake of being historical which I don't like. So I would give it a rate of five.

Evita (1996): Dir: Alan Parker / Cast: Madonna, Antonio Banderas, Jonathan Pryce, Jimmy Nail, Olga Merediz: Almost every aspect of this film is musical with dialogue expressed beautifully by lyrics. Madonna stars as Evita, the wife of a political leader and how she pulls her way to the top. Expertly crafted and executed brilliantly by director Alan Parker who has made great musicals before with Fame and Pink Floyd: The Wall. Madonna's voice compliments the material as she pours emotion through song. She is an aid to her political significant other but all attention falls on her even up to her death through illness. This is easily the best performance from a musician whose critics have not been kind to her in the past. Antonio Banderas is also effective as the narrator who expresses his views through lyrics and makes a great musical counter to Madonna's veteran skills. He will be there until the end just as he is in translating it all to us. Jonathan Pryce is well cast as a political figure overshadowed by her presence but ultimately benefiting greatly. Jimmy Nail as a tango dancer she has an affair with could have been less predictable but at any rate it further skirts Evita under the radar. Spectacular art direction and massive production highlight a message of manipulation. Madonna is not accustom to great films but here she is at her best in a role she was born to play and she sparkles. Score: 9 ½ / 10
