Woodyanders Rich gal Sheila Morris (lovely blonde Janet Agren) hires scruffy guide Mark Butler (nicely played with rugged conviction by Robert Kerrman) to find her sister Diana (busty brunette Paola Senatore) who has gone missing in the treacherous jungle of New Guinea. The pair run afoul of not only a deadly tribe of savage cannibals, but also a freaky Jim Jones-type religious cult led by the deranged Jonas (a smooth portrayal by Ivan Rassimov). Writer/director Umberto Lenzi keeps the enjoyably lurid story moving along at a brisk pace, maintains a harsh and unapologetic take-no-prisoners sleazy tone throughout, and delivers a pleasing generous amount of both tasty gratuitous female nudity -- statuesque stunner Agren gets stripped naked and painted gold -- and in-your-face nasty gore that includes a castration, decapitation, evisceration, and the expected graphic gut munching. Comely Me Me Lai lends sturdy support as helpful native girl Mowara while token big name Mel Ferror pops up in a few scenes as knowledgeable professor Carter. Federico Zanni's handsome cinematography provides several breathtaking shots of the lush tropical scenery. The funky-throbbing score by Roberto Donati and Fiamma Maglione hits the get-down groovy spot. Good low-grade fun.
Sam Panico What happens when you throw assassins in New York City, cannibals in the jungle and a Jim Jones-like cult leader into a big pot and set it to boil? You get Eaten Alive!Sheila (Janet Agren, City of the Living Dead, Hands of Steel) is searching for her sister, Diana (Paola Senatore, Emanuelle in America) who has disappeared in the jungle. She hires Mark (Robert Kerman, Cannibal Holocaust) to help her find her way through the jungle. Oh yeah - and there are killers in the city using blowdarts. That doesn't matter so much once we're in the jungle. When they find Diana - after being chased by cannibals - they learn that she has joined the cult of Jonas (Ivan Rassimov, everyone cheer when he shows up to make this movie awesome), who abuses, murders, manipulates and ********* everyone and anyone he gets close to. Seriously, the minute Jonas shows up, this film goes off the rails. First, he burns a man on a funeral pyre and ordering his wife Mowara (Me Me Lai, who thanks to appearances in this film, Last Cannibal World and Man from Deep River is pretty much to this genre as Edwich Fenech, Barbara Bouchet or Nieves Navaro are to giallo)to be ritually raped. Then, he hypnotizes Sheila and takes her on an altar using a snake phallus covered in venom and blood (yep, really). He pretty much owns everyone he can get his hands on, but Mowara, Sheila,Jonas preaches the Book of Isiah and pretty much owns everyone he can get his hands on, but Mowara, Sheila, Mark and Diana all attempt to escape. Diana and Mowara are overtaken by cannibals, with Diana graphically devoured while her sister and Mark watch helplessly. A helicopter arrives at the last minute to save them while the film goes into full exploitation mode, with the cult killing themselves ala Jonestown, leaving only one female survivor.Oh man, I forgot! Mel Ferrer (The Visitor, Nightmare City) shows up as a professor!Director Umberto Lenzi knows how to make a down and dirty film. He also knows how to keep it entertaining. Just witness other films he's done like Ghosthouse! Plus, he's the master of recycling, as this film re-uses the crocodile death and a woman being eaten from his 1972 film Sacrifice! (also starring Rassimov and Me Me Lai), Me Me Lai's death from Ruggero Deodato's Jungle Holocaust and a castration, a monkey being devoured by a monkey and a man being eaten by a crocodile from Sergio Martino's Slave of the Cannibal God. You could say he...cannibalized those movies! Sorry.Again, keep in mind that these are rough films. They're nearly indefensible, to be honest. I kind of wish the story of Jonas and his cult was more of the movie, with less of the cannibals. But you know, I can't send notes back to Lenzi with a time machine or anything!
Cannibal_Connection Eaten Alive follows a young woman (Janet Agren) who searches for her lost sister. Turns out her sister have joined a sect that has disappeared into the jungles of Borneo. With Vietnam veteran Mark at her side she sets off to find her sister. As per usual, the acting isn't of the highest quality but you do get cannibal flick poster girl Me Me Lai spending most of the time on screen with her breast bare, female lead Janet Agren covered in gold paint and abused with a dildo dipped in snake blood among other things. Now that's gotta count for something! But, I must say that I find it bit hard to recommend this title. If you are fan of the genre, you will most likely recognize every gore scene in the movie bar a select few. And I mean that literally. A lot of the gore scenes are lifted straight out other Cannibal movies, like MAN FROM DEEP RIVER and LAST CANNIBAL WORLD. There's probably more movies stuck in there.Ultimately, this is one for die-hard fans to check off their list. If you haven't seen any Italian jungle movies, you'd be better off watching CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST and if you're an avid fan, you have seen most of the gore scenes in other movies.
lost-in-limbo In New York an assassin is knocking off targeted victims with a dart soaked in Cobra venom and while trying to escape, he gets killed in a car accident. This leads to a young lady who heads to New Guinea to find her older sister, after the police discover on the assassin an item that belonged to her missing sister. She and a fellow American guide she hires when she gets there, head out on a journey through the wild wilderness filled exotically dangerous animals and blood thirsty cannibals to reach a purification cult colony led by an sadistically influential and crazy leader. I'm basically a new comer to the sub-genre, which has caught my curiosity in more recent times. I've seen one or two cannibal films, but it has never really struck me until now. Umberto Lenzi's "Eaten Alive" was never really on my hit list either, but I was just craving something different and it just happened to be near by for a nice price. While, it might not be held up in high regards with "Cannibal Holocaust" and "Cannibal Ferox", I found it to be a mildly amusing and reasonable addition to the list. It starts off oddly enough, despite a slow beginning to proceedings and then it finally hits its straps in the closing half. Lenzi added something else to the rancid ingredients. The cannibal element of the story felt more like a supporting part to the religious cult of fanatics who believe in purification. These inserts of the cult group got very silly and tend to drag in the latter scenes. While, the exploitive cannibal feeding and mutilations is primly nasty and sick, it can get quite cheesy and uninspired in its repetitive actions, because its so over-the-top to take seriously. Must love the cannibals' wigs and ever-changing appearances. One question is that do they always happen to be hungry when they encounter someone. Although the animal violence was more often genuine footage. Every now and then it takes some time off the story to look at the animals. Cue in when animals attack by pitting them against each other! Is this suppose to desensitize us to what's about to come? As it seemed more like it was there to pad out the film. Lenzi stacks up some memorably sleazy scenes in very trashy doses. The camera-work has that hectic semi-documentary style that likes its close ups and a kicking soundtrack with a funky rhythm. The unexciting script provides a lot useless chatter and constant ringing of… $80,000. How much was it again? $80,000. Did get a bit on the annoying side. Although, not as much as the atrociously wretched dubbing. Awful it was! From this it's hard to grasp that of the performances, but I guess they were fair. The divine looking Janet Agren and Paola Senatore are acceptable as the two sisters. Robert Kerma makes a decent turn as the hired guide and Ivan Rassimov is strikingly good as the venomous cult leader. Mei Mei Lai appears and Mel Ferrer in a minor role. What's served up on the menu? A hammy cult coot with trashy cannibalistic entertainment slanted on the side.
