Synopsis

Thirty years ago, aliens arrive on Earth. Not to conquer or give aid, but to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the aliens' welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. paulclaassen I must admit I was skeptical about this film, as the trailer did nothing for my senses and even the premise seemed like something that's been done a hundred times before. But boy, was I in for a surprise! The film gets more interesting as it progresses, and is ultimately absolutely fantastic. It is a thrill ride of note with amazing action sequences and incredible visuals. Sharlo Copley is brilliant as Wikus van der Merwe, and deservedly won a few awards as Best Actor
vivekgolds Nice piece of work in presenting sci-fi movie. You are crazy if you don't like this movie.
yocumag I think the only reason I watched this the first time is because I was in high school and it was popular. I just turned it off 30 mins in because Sharlto Copley's character did something way too dumb to forgive. The entire first act is A) unbearable to watch due to the camera action (and I enjoyed Cloverfield) and B) unbearable to watch due to Sharlto's awful South African accent. If you make it past there, you get into a story trying to make you like someone who is taking joy in evicting residents who are unwillingly stuck in a country, city, planet that doesn't want them there. I had to turn it off this time because our "hero" finds an unknown device of alien origin with alien markings filled with an alien goo and inexplicably opens it and it sprays him in the face, catalyzing act 3. From here, what I remember is fuzzy but I know it makes no sense that fuel would morph another species into your species. It's literally like if we poured gasoline on a shrimp and it sprouted arms, legs, etc. And, yes, I know that this is a metaphor for apartheid. I want to like this movie because interspecies politics can be entertaining and eye-opening, but this is very poorly written.
ohmap-977-664810 I read a few of the "hated" it opinions and some were calling the movie "absurd". If we get right down to it, all science fiction is a bit absurd and requires the mind to be open to new ideas.OK...I watched the movie knowing absolutely nothing going in and I was ENTERTAINED for a couple of hours. Hey baby...this thing is fast paced! It is NOT boring at all. I had some brandy, kicked back, and enjoyed the roller coaster ride. There are times when I was asking: what the h-e-l-l did I just see? The protagonist is a nerd in the beginning, but forms a friendship with the aliens at the end when he is on the receiving end of mankind's bad intentions. This is a FAST paced movie and can be mildly graphic, but is a great way to spend a couple of hours.
