kevandeb A slow burner of an online world that encompasses everybody. A slow build delivers in spades as to the dangers and benefits of an online existence. The payoff of a convenient connective life but a disconnected family is amply displayed and multiple story threads come together for a strong crescendo. It is still relevant in 2017 that children's lives are being decimated by knuckle dragging antagonists supported by parents too ignorant, stupid or ill equipped to control their retarded offspring. It is poorly understood in today's society the pressures on our children in a 100% visible world where your every move is judged, the parents and older generations need to catch a wake up call and not expect their kids to 'get a grip'. It is the parents and grandparents that need to understand how life is so hard for kids today. As a 55 year old who works in IT and Cyber security I see far too much of the perils kids face that we never did.
Leofwine_draca DISCONNECT is a mature and reflective piece of film-making exploring the impact of the Internet upon the lives of ordinary people. It's one of those films that takes multiple sub-plots involving different characters and weaves them together as the running time progresses, eventually bringing them all together at the climax. It's a surprisingly provocative little movie in which the dark side of being online is explored in some surprisingly explicit moments. The good news is that the cast is rather good and all of the performers are up to the job: Frank Grillo, Paula Patton, Alexander Skarsgard, Max Thieriot, Michael Nyqvist, and Andrea Riseborough all shine in their various parts and their screen time is weighted equally. This is certainly a repulsive film in places, but also an oddly gripping one, and the sheer quality of the production wins through in the end. It's well worth a watch for those interested in seeing how the Internet has become central to the lives of a lot of people on the planet, for better or worse.
labrat1996 I was looking for a diversion and a reason to keep my HBO Now account, now that GOT has ended and I ran across this movie. I read some reviews before I watched it and expected a movie worth my while, but I have to say that I was riveted to my seat throughout the entire movie and found it entertaining, thoughtful, on point, well acted, well directed, properly paced and thought provoking. The ending slow motion sequence was a work of art. I highly recommend a viewing. If you have HBO and haven't seen this movie, then you need to. You won't have to wrap your mind around it to the point of frustration like the current season of True Detective. This movie reminds me of Crash, but I like this movie more. This movie is more relevant given that I have a teenage daughter and I myself spend many hours online. I just can't believe it did so poorly at the box office. Movies like this are one of the only reasons I keep my HBO Now subscription, because there have been so many similar gems that I have discovered that I would never even considered watching on Pay Per View.
blanche-2 "Disconnect" from 2012 stars Jason Bateman, Frank Grillo, Michael Nyqvist, Paula Patton, Andrea Riseborough, and Alexander Skarsgård.It's the story of people and their involvement with the Internet. Three stories, with an interconnection between all of the episodes. One story has to do with cyberbullying and its results. One story has to do with a porn site and a reporter doing a story featuring one of the young men who works on the site. The third story has to do with identity theft, a chat room, and a couple that has suffered a significant loss.Excellent, very well fleshed out characters, showing what happens to people who in a sense break the anonymity of the Internet. Jason Bateman, normally a low-key actor with a wonderful sense of comedy, is excellent as a father trying to figure out his son's actions. Frank Grillo, as a former cop turned detective, does a great job playing a man trying to communicate with his son and failing. All the stories are powerful, but the most suspenseful and action-filled for me was the story starring Andrea Risborough as a reporter whose ambition and desire to protect her source get her in deeper than she planned. One thing that struck me is that in two of the stories, people took the law into their own hands because the police/Feds, overwhelmed with these issues, weren't working fast enough. Really a good film to see, well acted, well directed, and poignant.
